Spent a week at the Playabonita Hotel between 6th-13th August 2017; party of 3 families included children between 10 and 20. This is a pleasant hotel with incredible views; please do read the remainder of the review, I believe it to be a fair and honest reflection of our stay. I would struggle to describe this as a 4 star hotel.

Check-In: the longest, most comprehensive check-in ever! No queue but took almost 20 minutes for the reception staff to explain the hotel to us; have to be honest after being up all night we just wanted to get to our rooms and shower. Despite the lengthy description the staff eliminated to tell us that our All Inclusive status would be revoked at midday on leaving day, in all the hotels we have stayed in over the years, this has never happened before and was an extremely disappointing end to our stay. Check Out: our check left us with a sour taste at the end of our holiday; at check in we had expressed a need to retain 1 room for a late check out; I am a disabled lady resulting in extra difficulties. There is a huge banner in reception advertising “Late Check Out” this is also advertised in the hotel lifts. We were told to return the day before leaving to request the late check out. At 8am the morning before leaving my husband was at reception, my additional needs mean keeping a room is important to us. The reception staff were not interested at all, my husband received the generic response “we will allow you to use the shower room and put your cases in the luggage room”. Had I known this I would have booked an extra night at the time of booking the holiday. The “Late Check Out” advertised was unavailable, why are they still advertising it? Had it been available they were asking 39 euros to retain the room until 6pm – this is just for the room, not for the All Inclusive! Not due to be collected until 6pm we checked out as instructed at midday, we were so shocked to find that our All Inclusive cards were cancelled, we had not budgeted for this, we would like to have been told. We are frequent travellers, almost always going home on a late flight, this has never ever happened before, we were so disappointed. We were provided with an electronic key for the luggage room but for most of the day the room was wide open; one of us spent the last day in reception making sure our luggage was safe; total waste of an afternoon.

On arrival our first view of the hotel was from the road side and slightly worrying, it appeared basic and tired however once inside the hotel grounds it is actually very nice. The communal areas are typical of a 90's/early 2000 Spanish hotel with large tiled reception area, water feature, seating etc. There is a huge floor to ceiling picture window which looks out to the stunning ocean views. Reception area extends to an air conditioned bar area but seating is very limited; there are also a couple of small shops and mini entertainment arcade.

Our rooms were located on floor 3 and close together as requested, we enjoyed the luxury of a sea view, feeling we were almost on the beach. Again, the accommodation was typical of a Spanish hotel; they were adequate; clean, basic and in need of an update. As a family of 3 the rooms were small but for the other members of our party who had 4 to a room it was on the tight side. The room had 2 small double beds, large mirrored wardrobes, with a chargeable safe, small fridge, dressing table with chair and an old TV; on the balcony was dated cane furniture. Bathrooms were clean and tidy but in need of an update; they consisted of bath with over shower, sink with large marble top, loo and bidet. There was a large mirror, razor socket and a poor hair dryer. Rooms were freshened on a daily basis, with replacement towels provided.

The pool is located on the beach a short 5 minute walk to the right of the hotel. A room key is required to leave the hotel grounds then access and exit the pool area. The pool area is lovely but much too small for the size of the hotel; I am of the opinion that both the pool and terrace area are not sufficient for the number of guests. The gate to the pool area opens at 10am at which time there is already a large queue for sunbeds, chairs and umbrellas; throughout the day there are more towels on sunbeds than there are people, very annoying. Our party enjoyed the pool and slides, all had lots of fun and a pleasant breeze came off the sea. A life guard is on duty but in all honesty I'm not sure how much notice he was actually taking.

There is an indoor pool but this is not open in high season. The hotel lifts service the beach and pool however the hotel disabled ramp leading to the exit is very steep; the public access to the beach is much steeper, I would not recommend to a disabled guest.

Located on floor 7, the main restaurant enjoyed beautiful views of the beach and the ocean. On arrival a room key must be presented to gain access, this is required again to order drinks to the table. Overall the food was enjoyable but repetitive, we ate out 3 evenings out of 7 to give ourselves a break. Show cooking takes place at every meal time, guests can choose fresh meat, fish, pasta, crepes etc. Outside of restaurant opening times, simple snacks were available at the pool bar, these changed each day but the choice was very limited. Food was also available to purchase at the reception bar or the beach bar.

There are 3 bars – reception area, pool area and beach bar; all inclusive cards can be used in all. Seating in all 3 areas are always in demand. Reception area is air conditioned; this extends itself to an outdoor terrace with a pool table. Pool area – only available in the day when pool is open and is very small. Beach Bar is the largest of the bars and where evening entertainment takes place so this bar gets very busy after evening meal. We took our drinks to the beach, we enjoyed the sea breeze whilst the children played in the sand.

There was a little entertainment around the pool which our party participated in however the evening entertainment was dreadful, it must be the worst we have experienced. We spent our evenings sat on the upper terrace or on the beach with drinks from the beach bar – be aware that the hotel beach gate locks at 1pm when guests must use the steep public beach access.

The beach is a man made beach consisting of multiple coves and shingle beach. Once at sea level, the walk way is flat and there is only a short walk to the water. The water is fresh and clear but there is a steep ridge a few metres out.

Reception must be the worst reception staff we have encountered and really let down the other staff who provide good customer service. Obstructive job worth's come to mind to be honest. Maids were excellent, most speak little English but are happy, friendly and hard working. Restaurant staff always excellent, can not praise enough. Again, they do not all speak fluent English but they try. Such hard working staff, a real credit to this hotel. Bar staff a little hit and miss but of course you find this in every industry. As a disabled lady did not appreciate being stuck at the beach at 2am to have to attempt the very steep walk up steps to return to the hotel.

We celebrated 2 Birthdays during our stay and woke up to balloons on our door and a bottle of Cava which was a lovely gesture.

The views sell this hotel, the service let's it down. Pool towels can be rented from reception, deposit of 10 euro and 1 euro for a clean exchange. Must be returned dry. Room safe is charged at 3 euros per day, unlike other hotels, there is not a refundable element to this payment.

Unable to retain our room passed midday as described, we used the courtesy rooms in reception. These are 2 large rooms with toilet, sink and shower; there is a seat, hanging hooks and a hairdryer. These rooms are very hot, I had to go out into reception to put make up on. Towels are available from reception but remember to save shower gel etc.

Wi-Fi was useless, took the laptop for work, couldn't even get a connection in reception; so much for the free 30 minutes a day - you'd think in 2017 they could sort it out; even McDonald's can manage that!

The hotel is built into a steep hillside so the hotel levels can be confusing – reception is on level 8, restaurant level 7 and the beach and pool at the bottom.

Approximately a 20 minute car journey from Malaga airport; the hotel is located between the resorts of Benalmadena and Fuengirola, Playabonita is a convenient base to access the larger resorts along the coast. The walk either way would probably take an able bodied person around 1-1.5 hours; it is a busy main road with busses running regularly; bus stops can be found almost outside the hotel.

Very clean and spacious hotel. Staff were all very helpful. The whole experience was good. Music from beach/hotel entertainment was loud at night but all finished at 12 midnight. Lots of children but it was school holidays. Fridge in room a bonus. Only let down was scruffy/untidy around pool area but not staff fault as some all inclusive people just left ice cream cartons and unwanted drinks where they sat instead of putting in bin. Large floats in pool made it difficult to swim. Rooms have 2 double beds in family rooms. Great Italian restaurant outside hotel.

Perfect location about 2 miles out from Benalmadena so very quiet with rooms overlooking the sea. Very spacious clean room. Daily maid service with fresh towels on request. Bus stops outside hotel and very cheap to travel. Friendly helpful staff. Lovely fresh food and plenty of choice. You can hire a safe. Free WiFi for one hour a day in reception area.

There is a fridge and hairdryer in the room but no tea/coffee making facilities, so take a travel kettle. Could not fault this hotel at all. No complaints whatsoever and would certainly go back. Nothing better than sleeping with the balcony door open listening to just the rolling waves of the sea (heavenly).

Playa Bonita Hotel is an excellent 4 star hotel with good food. The only two things that let it down will be number one; because of the position on the outside of the main resort, it is not good for walking out for that evening stroll. Now you cannot do anything about the position but you can sort the entertainment in the evening and this is an on going position in the Hotel Bonita having now visited for a second time. The only very good evening we had was a flamenco show in the main show bar and the place was packed to enjoy a most pleasant evening. Most of our two week stay this room was closed!

Lovely hotel. Lovely views. Great pool. Great rooms. Entertainment could be improved my 6 & 8 year old girls weren't impressed however the entertainers were wonderful, we loved the aqua aerobics and pool parties. Recommend doing all inclusive as it is very pricey (water that is 40c at the supermarket is €2 at the hotel!). There are a couple of supermarkets and restaurants that are walking distance (with kids). But a bus ride into Benalmádena and the prices drop significantly! Also if you're vegetarian you may struggle, many didnt understand at all what I meant. It's definitely worth reading up on some basic Spanish as I did find a lot of the hotel workers and local shop and restaurants did not speak or understand English well. WiFi only free 1 hour a day in the lobby but I enjoyed the week off my phone. Would recommend.
