We found the hotel very convenient for the resort centre for all needs. The beaches are ok. The beach opposite the hotel is being washed away by the sea and further along is quite stoney. The main beach is the better one with fine gritty sand. We enjoyed lots of lovely meals in the many and varied restaurants and bars which we found to be good value. It was very enjoyable to soak up the atmosphere in the evenings especially around the old town area with lots of shopping.

Very pleasant. Very nice around the plazas with busking entertainment. Generally seems to be an "older" holiday maker. Restaurants / general eating locations excellent. Limited sunbeds on beach on all coves, they operate a book and reserve for next day policy. Beaches very "shingly".

Nerja must have once been a small, sleepy Andalusian fishing port, but now appears to be predominantly villas and apartments with some larger hotels, most of which are no more than 3 to 5 stories high, a lot of these are up quite a steep slope, so bear this in mind if you are choosing a hotel/self catering at the back of the resort. Not sure how big the hotels to West of Nerja are as we didn't go there and would be quite a trip from the town centre as well. At least most of the building with a notable exception of a 5ish story block behind our hotel is typical low key/level white Andalusian style. The range of hills and mountains at the back of Nerja is spectacular and the lights on a night are just magical. We were there at the end of March, beginning of April and the weather was glorious. The square near the Balcon De Europa hotel (nice hotel, but fairly elderly clientele and didn't have any real open spaces outside as its surrounded by buildings on the square) seems to have a quite a lot of life and free entertainment, and most of the nightlife is centered off this area. Transport, the local busses seem reasonable, the main bus stops and 'bus station' (for that look for a wooden hut!) are on the main road up at the back of Nerja. They go along the coast both ways, up to the Caves de Nerja (definitely worth a visit - the Alhambra guides could take some advice from the way this excellent centre is run) bus cost 4 Euros each return, taxi 16 Euros return. Also had a very good lunch there at the restaurant which again has impressive coastal views, or they have an all you can eat buffet for 11 Euros. Anyone wanting to get into the hills surrounding Nerja try the local firm Jeep tours, the guy who runs it is Dutch and speaks good English. They do a full 65 Euros and 35 Euros half day tour, they also do a mix of walking and jeep if you are feeling energetic. There was also kayaking from the beach east of the Parador most mornings.

Granada & Alhambra definitely a must, we did it in a very long, hot day 6.30am bus (18 Euros each return) to Granada Bus Station, local bus SN1 into Granada centre, had look round city centre very beautiful, got C3 in Place de Isabella which drops you outside the palace entrance. Picked up pre booked tickets (very expensive at 42 Euros each - but definitely worth it as it meant you skipped all the very long queues waiting to pay and got a 'free' 24 hour audio tour of Alhambra & Granada (which was useless)! Was recommended to eat in the restaurant opposite main entrance gate and although a wee bit over priced had a very good traditional meal. Managed to have a good look at most of the main areas of the Alhambra Palaces, but to do it real justice and walk round the gardens and also allow for the queues to get into the Nadrid Palace, you would ideally need a minimum of a full day or preferably 1 and a half days. It was quite hot and lots of walking so comfy shoes essential and suitable clothing to provide you with some shade! Got C3 bus back into Granada and had a lovely meal in the Plaza Nueva then with slightly sore feet got a taxi to Granada Bus Station for 8 Euros for the 8pm bus back to Nerja! On trying to board the bus were told that our open return tickets need to be validated at the main counter, however after a very quick run up the escalator and jumping the queue also found out that the open ticket wasn't valid for the last bus to Nerja on a Saturday night, so it cost us a further 12 Euros to get extra tickets! So if you are booking tickets for Granada check with the people at Nerja and Granada bus stations that you have the correct tickets and ensure they are validated at the ticket desk before you try and get on the bus! It was approx 10.30pm by the time we got back to the Nerja drop off point and then there was the walk back down the hill to the Parador! We didn't do much the next day!

Going to Granada & the Alhambra ideally try and do it more than one day, given hindsight I would have chosen to stay at least 2 days possibly 3, Granada is a beautiful city and apart from the Alhambra is well worth a visit, I would definitely go back. Cant emphasise enough to pre plan this to get the best cheap deals in lots of time I mean months not weeks, Alhambra tours get booked up immediately, even the expensive ones. Would suggest going to Granada the night before, get your bearings and book an early morning tour of the Alhambra when its cooler. Think there a number of hotels on or around the Alhambra site including the Parador, however the entire site is on the top of a very steep hill and the night life, restaurants etc appears to be in the city centre. My choice would be to try and find a quietish hotel just off the centre but with in walking distance of the centre, remember to ask if you can leave your luggage there on departure day if necessary and use the local C1234 Bus service to navigate round the city. Also if possible download a good Spanish translator app if your Spanish is limited to the basics like mine, apart from the tourist spots there are few who speak English!

Nice little town with plenty of good bars for tapas, coffee and watch the world go by. We haven't been here for ten years, it's hasn't changed too much and although there has been some development it hasn't been spoilt and that's a really nice thing. It still has a nice feel to it. There's no shortage of places to eat, good range to suit all budgets. There's a good mix of shops too and a really nice place to wander through the little streets.

The old town Nerja is a delight. Clean, well served by the cafe culture, restaurants etc only to be found around the Med, but with many more pluses. It does cater for people with mobility problems, but then this is an older Spanish town and has some uphill climbs to some of the shops. You don't have to do that though as the flatter part around the coast is accessible in the built area. Not somewhere you could do 'the beach' though if you are not as light on your feet as some. Great value family town though with 'pocket parks and amusements' for the children rather than the 'big flash splash' features found in some resorts. There are a couple a little way out of the town though. Overall it is a nice town which is welcoming and very family friendly. One warning though, if you're watching your waste line - avoid the ice cream shop in the main square, 6 out of 5 stars!

Very pretty little town, not too commercialised at all, lots of locals milling around doing their daily business. I loved it because it still has such a Spanish feel to it, whereas some resorts you go to can be just like being at home, but here you feel part of the community and everyone is so friendly and relaxed, it rubs off on you. I loved all the little narrow winding streets, almost like a maze, so pretty and perfect. I really loved it and felt at home. Prices were also very reasonable, especially if you visited the tapas bars where the locals go, you get a very good deal and gorgeous tapas. If you go to some of the restaurants on the seafront etc, obviously you will pay a lot more and that is fair enough because it is like that the world over.

The town offers a very good choice of restaurants, bars and shops. Burrianna beach and the promenade of bars and shops is excellent. Unfortunately to get from this beach to the town itself is now a trek as the coastal path has been closed. The town is lively without having the rowdiness of other resorts on the Costa del Sol.

Nerja is a lovely town, very Spanish and not spoiled by tourism, the apartments are about a 20 minute walk along the beach from the town, or there are frequent buses just outside the complex, both to Nerja or Malaga, which stops at Torrox and Torre del Mar.

Loved Nerja and will definitely return. Lovely restaurants and bars. We visited in May and would probably go in June when the weather is a bit warmer in the evenings. Thoroughly recommend this charming little town.

Lovely town with several beaches, a large variety of restaurants and bars and a wide range of shops without being too touristy and thankfully no concrete jungle.

Beaches

Boasting 16 km of stunning beaches, Nerja has no shortage for those looking for the perfect spot to soak up the sunshine. The main and most popular beach is Playa Burriana, it has good facilities on hand such as sun loungers for hire, play area for children, showers and water-sports including pedalos, banana boats, para-sailing and jet skis. The promenade behind the beach is lined with cafes and restaurants convenient for snacks and refreshments.

Things to do

A great way to see the town and local area is by jeep or buggy safari, both are excellent ways to see the countryside and are great fun for all ages. The tourist train is also a good way to see the town and is hugely popular with children.

Twice a week the town holds a market, visitors are sure to pick up a bargain from the array of stalls offering an assortment of goods. The history museum and donkey sanctuary are also well worth a visit and are a great way to spend an afternoon.

Out and about

The resort has an extensive range of restaurants offering everything from traditional Spanish specialties to international cuisines, catering for all budgets and tastes. Most restaurants are 'family friendly' and offer special menus for children.

Nerja has a vibrant nightlife with an array of bars and nightclubs open until the early hours. Plaza Tutti Frutti is the main hub of activity with a good selection of bars open til late and some offering entertainment or live music.

Nearby places of interest

Definitely on the the 'to do' list when in Nerja should be the Nerja Caves. The magnificent caves are one of Spain's most spectacular historical sites. The huge chambers contain wall paintings believed to be 20,000 years old and stunning natural rock formations.
