Small, quite village. I recommend to hire a car - this part of Crete is so beautiful and you can enjoy so many beautiful places in just 30 minutes drive from the hotel.

Its picturesque with the hills mountains and the sea. It can feel a little remote since there were no shops etc in the immediate vicinity. It felt very safe. We loved watching the cruise ships all lit up at night sailing through the bay.

My first visit to Greece in 1995 was to Kalyves. I loved the small friendly village then and little has changed in those years. There are lots more sun beds available at no cost other than buying a drink (you had to get up early to get beds in 1995 which you collected from a chained up stack and paid a couple of drachmas). The small and friendly shops are still there and the relaxed atmosphere was just what I hoped to return to. I wasn't looking for any entertainment and I don't think there is any so if you are looking for clubs and dancing don't choose this resort, but it is why I chose it. Good local busses €2.50 to Chania if you want to explore. Great tavernas, great Greek food. I would recommend this relaxing week in a lovely Greek village.

Felt like a real place rather than just a holiday resort. Really enjoyed mixing with the locals.

A long sandy beach is backed by pine forests and is split into two parts - Maistrali and Xydas. Here you will find shallow waters as well as a range of watersports and sun loungers are laid out ready for hire. For those wishing to explore further, Almyrida Beach is just a ten minute drive away where there is a sheltered cove and plenty of trees for shade.

Nearby Attractions

There are plenty of day trips to be had from Kalyves including taking a 15 minute drive to the ancient ruins of Aptera where there are 1st century Roman ruins. Half an hour away is the lively resort of Chania with its Venetian styled architecture and harbour front fortress.

Quick Facts

Chania Airport is approximately 32km away - transfer time about 45 minutes.
