Bajamar

Bajamar, Tenerife, Canary Islands

Bajamar, located on the north west coast of Tenerife, is a popular seaside retreat for islanders. Its rugged coastline and mountain scenery are great for walking, fishing, surfing and exploring rural Tenerife.

Bajamar

Sheltered by the Anaga mountains, Bajamar and Punta de Hilgado offer a mild climate. These 2 old fashioned little towns sit across the bay from each other and offer scenic views, fresh seafood restaurants, a retreat from mass tourism and a convenient base for hiking in the mountains.

Beaches

There are no long white sand beaches here and the waters are more suited to surfing than bathing. However, there is a fun and vibrant atmosphere at the two natural seawater pools in Bajamar. The pools make for sheltered and safe bathing and have plenty of surrounding space for lazing in the sun. Next to the swimming pools there is a very small beach, which is sheltered from the sea by a wall.

Things to Do

Fishing, surfing and hiking are top of the list for outdoor adventures but there are plenty more relaxing ways to spend your time too.

Drive into the Anaga mountains and explore old and remote mountain villages such as Taganana, the terraced hamlet of Las Carboneras or Chinamada known for it's 'cave' houses built into the mountainside. Indeed, from Punta de Hilgado there is a footpath to Chinamada with a splendid viewpoint along the way.

Less than half an hour southwards along the coast, in the midst of the islands largest wine growing regions, are the towns of Tacaronte and El Sauzal. Here you have the opportunity to visit the wine museum and browse the stalls of the large farmers market held at the weekends.

Out and About

Stroll along the promenade and admire views of the rugged coastline, there are plenty of benches to sit down and take five. On the coast road on the outskirts of Bajamar, towards Punta de Hilgado, you can take a break at the Cafe Melita. Perched above the water and it's walls dripping in flowers, the cafe offers home-made cakes and fabulous views.

In Punta de Hilgado there is a small working fishing harbour and, naturally, a good choice of fresh fish restaurants. The town has steep little streets lined with painted houses and pretty gardens. And, when we said 'old fashioned' earlier, that excluded the lighthouse which stands north of the town, tall, bright white and uber-modern.

Nearby Attractions

The historical city of San Cristobel de la Laguna is approx 20 minutes drive from Bajamar. The town centre is a World Heritage site and there are many centuries old buildings, delightful plazas and cobbled streets to explore.

Approx halfway between Bajamar and La Laguna, you could stop off at the peaceful little town of Tegueste. It is set in the valley and has a charming town square with a church, pretty gardens and some good restaurants. If you go Saturday or Sunday morning, you should catch the farmers market too.
