Bad Weather Prompts Rise in Overseas Holiday Searches

Posted by Sue Anderson, 22nd May 2012

The recent bad weather has prompted a dramatic increase in searches on our site for overseas holidays, with searches for holidays to Benidorm, Marmaris and Sharm el Sheikh topping the charts of places holidaymakers are looking to escape to.

Searches for overseas holidays increased by 37% compared to last year

During the last week of April, searches for overseas holidays increased by 37% when compared to the previous week and increased by 57% when compared to the same time last year. In terms of bookings, we experienced a 12% rise during the last week of April, when compared to the previous week.

When looking into other search enquiries on-site, as opposed to just general destination searches, we also noticed a rise in key word searches such as 'sunniest holidays' and 'bad weather escapes'.

Benidorm was the most popular destination

Looking further into which destinations were a favourite amongst Britons looking to escape the UK, the top 10 most popular resorts searched for by Brits in the last week of April were as follows:

1. Benidorm

2. Marmaris

3. Sham el Sheikh

4. Olu Deniz

5. Playa de las Americas

6. Icmeler

7. Albufeira

8. Palma Nova

9. Torremolinos

10. Salou

Whilst the bad weather might be a sore point for everyone else, the rise in holiday purchases is good news for us at sunshine.co.uk! We do tend to see a spike in searches and bookings when the weather is particularly wet and windy, but this time it's been a little more noticeable. Benidorm and Marmaris are very good spots for summer holidays, as you are almost guaranteed sunshine in the hot months, so it's no surprise to see them up there with the most popular.

Whilst April is known for its showers, it's quite surprising to see that there hasn't been much of an improvement now we're into May! It will be interesting to see what the stats show for this month.
