On driving to the hotel, the transfer is only about 20 minutes, this gives you an insight of the actual resort. I found the sight of half starving animals such as horses and cattle tied up and left on the side of the road very distressing and couldn't get this image out of my mind all holiday, I wanted to get a cab to try and help them, give them food and water in the blistering heat. I would not recommend going off the hotel grounds if you walk along the beach there a a few other hotels along the way but apart from that there is absolutely nothing about. We went on a few trips which were nice, cable car, boat trips etc and we got a cab to the Malecon which we would call the seafront, very disappointing was hoping to see some life here like shops, bars and restaurants but found none. We asked a cab driver to drive us through town, this was a real eye opener there were some shops and cafes here but the overall place was poverty stricken and made you feel so sorry for the people here who obviously have nothing. Makes you realise how lucky we are. So to sum it all up I would visit the hotel again but the actual resort of Puerto Plata needs some serious makeover if it wants to attract tourists and their money.

The hotel is actually in Costa Dorada near Puerto Plata. You can easily visit Puerto Plata by taxi. The taxis have a good system - you can either keep the driver with you or arrange to meet him at a set time. You don't pay him until you get back to the hotel so you will not get stranded.
