Limassol

Approximately 60 minutes from Paphos airport, Limassol has a lot to offer in the form of local history and culture. Eat, drink and be merry is the motto for this area, especially in September when the locals celebrate the festival of wine. For those who enjoy the clink of a cash till then a visit to Makarios Avenue is a must, or if you want to escape the familiarity of high street shops, try the cobbled streets that lay behind the seafront. A good destination for couples and families.

Beaches

There are several beaches lining the coast of Limassol backed with high-rise hotels, shops, restaurants and bars. The main town beach is Dassoudi Beach, stretching for 3km here visitors will find ample sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, coarse sand and pebbles with calm water ideal for swimming, paddling and enjoying a variety of watersports.

For those who wish to escape the crowds head to Governor's Beach, around 30km east of Limassol, accessed via steps this beach is found at the bottom of white cliffs. The beach is still popular enough to have a couple of restaurants and a regular bus service from Limassol. Alternatively around 15 mins drive south of Limassol is the famous Lady's Mile Beach, 7km of flat sand which is fronted by the sea and backed by the Akrotiri salt lake. The water here is shallow and clear, and is also a popular spot for windsurfing.

Things to do

Limassol has plenty of activities and places to visit on both land and in the water; water sports include diving, snorkelling, surfing, windsurfing, water-skiing and catamaran trips.

For those who prefer to stay on dry land there are many attractions including water parks, museums, ruins, churches and mosques. Another must see is the Limassol Castle, once serving as a prison as recent as 1950 and is now home to Limassol's Medieval Museum.

Nearby places of interest

Around 20km from the centre of Limassol is the Kourion Archeological Site, overlooking the coast it features a striking amphitheatre, stately villas and impressive floor mosaics.

A little closer to Limasssol at 11km is the archaeological site of the Kolossi Castle. What remains of the castle is an empty shell where its impressive fortified walls have resisted attacks and earthquakes.

Situated just south-east of Akrotiri Salt Lake on Cape Gata is the Agios Nikolaos ton Gaton Convent (St Nicholas of the Cats), said to be the first monastery on the island of Cyprus. Legend says the monastery was founded by Agia Eleni, mother of Constantine the Great, who left a piece of wood from the Holy Cross there.
