Beaches

The sandy walk -in beaches on the west side are probably the best for children as the water is generally calm. While the sandy beaches are great for children, they are not so good for snorkelling due to the large amounts of sand being displaced. If you are looking for somewhere to snorkel, then your best bet is the beaches with a rocky limestone shoreline. There is more coral growth at these beaches, therefore, more marine life.

A lot of the beaches on the east side are beautiful but can be very dangerous due to the roaring surf which creates undertows and strong breakers. While the beaches in this area are great for playing and sunbathing, it is recommended that you do not go swimming here.

Things to Do

Whether you are here for a relaxing holiday or just stepped off a cruise ship for day, there is plenty to keep you occupied in Cozumel.

Some of the most popular activities have to be diving and snorkeling and with the amazing facilities and marine life, it is easy to see why Cozumel is one of the top 5 dive destinations in the world. There is lots of close-to-shore snorkeling so the conditions are ideal for children and beginners.

A popular attraction is Chankanaab Park, a National Park that provides shelter and protection for plants and marine life. There is a great children's pool within the park which is shallow and sheltered from the ocean but at the same time allows smaller fish in and out with light wave action. There are also some sculptures to see.

Lots of the activities here are water based, ie diving, snorkeling, sailing trips and submarine trips, all great fun and worth trying. Or if you prefer staying on dry land why not take explore the area on a jeep or better still, on horseback.

Take a trip to the walled city of Tulum and visit its mysterious ruins then enjoy a few hours on Tulum's very own beach.

Out and About

Shopping is a popular activity in Cozumel and a good variety of shops can be found in downtown Cozumel. You will find just about anything you are looking for such as leather goods, jewellery and alcohol at very good prices.

There is a very good range of restaurants here, catering for all tastes and pockets. Many of the more traditional, family restaurants will be found in quieter areas but well worth tracking them down.

Nearby Attractions

Take a trip to Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of The New World. Here you will see the famous El Castillo pyramid and many other majestic structures. The trip can be made by road or by air, as a quicker alternative and probably more interesting.

Why not visit one of the outdoor parks such as Xcaret or Xel-Ha, where you can take part in many exciting and adventurous activities or simply relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Cancun is a short ferry ride away and great for shopping, great nightlife and fantastic beaches.

So whether it's bargain hunting, sunbathing or visiting ancient ruins, you will find it all Cozumel and the surrounding area.
