Does Your Region Determine Where You'll Go On Holiday?

Posted by Sue Anderson, 4th Mar 2014

Ultimately, holiday location choices are based on personal preferences. However, we started to wonder whether or not the whereabouts you are from determines what destinations you are likely to pick.

We sifted through our bookings data to uncover any trends that might exist where holiday bookings are concerned. We looked at holidays that were booked throughout 2013 and analysed the information to find out more about the average holiday length, cost and destination choices.

Scottish holidaymakers prefer Tenerife, but France is favourite for Londoners

According to our booking trends on-site, the following patterns were revealed for each region in the UK:

Scotland - Tenerife, 14 nights, £645.00 (most popular destination, holiday length and spend per person)

North West - Gran Canaria, 7 nights, £346.00

North East - Turkey, 10 nights, £552.00

Yorkshire & Humberside - Egypt, 10 nights, £512.00

East Midlands - Cyprus, 7 nights, £377.00

West Midlands - Spain, 10 nights, £462.00

Wales - Greece, 7 nights, £325.00

East Anglia - Spain, 10 nights, £498.00

London - France, 14 nights, £845.00

South West - Majorca, 10 nights, £430.00

South East - Portugal, 14 nights, £612.00

3* half board is most popular choice of accommodation

Our data also revealed that the most common board type of holidays booked in 2013 was 'half board' and the most popular star rating for all hotel bookings was '3*' accommodation.

We were surprised by the complete variation across the board, as only two regions - East Anglia and the West Midlands - both had the same destination as their preferred choice. Specifically, the most popular resorts based on bookings through our site are Sharm el Sheikh, Benidorm and Marmaris and it's easy to see why, as so many great offers can be found when looking to visit these places on holiday.
