Villajoyosa, Costa Blanca, Spain

Villajoyosa still maintains its quiet atmosphere, with its lovely coloured houses in the town centre, and for most people it is the ideal counterpart to the sometimes crowded Benidorm.

Some 10km from the bustling resort of Benidorm, Villajoyosa provides a great alternative for a holiday on the Costa Blanca. The long stretch of sandy beach is backed by a promenade lined with palm trees, shops, bars, restaurants and the iconic multi-coloured houses, ending at the towns fishing port.

Lovely little resort, great beach, lots of good restaurants and bars and the old town is really quaint. Popular with Spanish families so a more Spanish feel, not lots of English bars and tacky tourist shops etc. Very good tram links to other resorts too with tram station within an easy walk of the Allon Mediterrania Hotel - we went to Benidorm and Altea on the tram and all ran very smoothly, trams clean and on-time - and cheap!

Good location with good and cheap tram service which could take you up to Denia or south to Alicante with lots of stops that allow you to get off, walk along to coast, then get back on as you pay for the zones you travel through. Villajoyosa is quiet compared to Benidorm but you're an individual in Villajoyosa.

Quiet resort in March but if you wanted nightlife you would have gone to Benidorm. Lovely beach ideal for children or sunbathing and good promenade for walking, cycling or jogging whatever you are interested in. Bars that were open had friendly staff and the prices of drinks and food were good.

Villajoyosa is home to the Valor chocolate factory; it's free to visit and has a museum and shop.

Every Thursday morning is market day in Villajoyosa, fish markets are held every day by the port and there is a flea market on Sundays.

The Moors & Christian Fiesta is held at the end of every July and is well worth attending, the highlight being the disembarkation of the armies arriving on boats in the early hours.
