Culture & History Becoming Important for Holidaymakers

Posted by Sue Anderson, 6th May 2014

Apparently, some people want more from their holidays than just good sea views, white sandy beaches and a pina colada or three!

We polled 2,129 people aged 18 and over from around the UK and asked them questions about what influenced their destination choice when it came to the last holiday they spent abroad. Everyone that took part had been abroad in the last 12 months.

Two fifths look for a holiday destination offering culture/history

When we asked, 'What factors did you take into account when booking your last holiday destination?' and told people to pick all that applied to them from a list of possible answers, the top 10 priorities were revealed as follows:

1. Good weather - 91%

2. Nightlife - 62%

3. Culture/History - 41%

4. Idyllic beaches - 39%

5. Daytime activities - 33%

6. Local cuisine - 28%

7. Choice of accommodation - 25%

8. Affordable prices - 21%

9. Recommendations - 19%

10. Proximity to UK - 15%

'Rome' top destination for those seeking culture and history

Anyone who selected 'culture/history' was asked which destinations they would like to visit for this purpose, which revealed 'Rome' to be the most popular choice (67%), followed by 'Athens' (52%) and 'Cairo' (41%). These are all holiday destinations which offer incredible sights and experiences!

There are so many landmarks and destinations around the world that are rich in history, that it seems a shame to not see at least some of them. People should try to alternate their holiday destinations instead of going back to the same beach resort time and time again, or they risk never seeing the amazing cultural diversity and historical sights the world has on offer.
