Dominican Republic

Cheap Holidays to the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is the 2nd largest island in the Caribbean containing a wealth of natural beauty and heavenly beaches. Many an hour can be passed by relaxing on one the many beautiful beaches or for the more adventurous there is white water rafting and Monster Truck driving or you could take a trip to Confresi which is the world's largest dolphin lagoon.

How Hot?

The Dominican Republic occupies two-thirds of the Caribbean Island of Hispaniola, and is a popular year round destination with temperatures averaging in the late seventies annually. Lower humidity during November through to April makes this the ideal time to visit. High season for tropical storms and hurricanes is generally around August and September, with the southern coastal resorts hit the most.

While the likelihood of a direct hit is small, if travelling during hurricane season, we recommend you check your travel insurance cover before you leave, and shop around if necessary to make sure you have the necessary cover.

Out and About

Beautiful palm backed beaches and rugged cliffs line the coast and farmlands, deserts, rainforests and mountains fill the interior of this beautiful Caribbean country that shares it's island with Haiti.

Sight-seeing opportunities and visitor attractions abound and, in the capital of Santo Domingo alone there is a myriad of museums, including the Columbus Palace Museum and the Palace of Fine Arts, a Zoo, Botanical Gardens and National Aquarium, the historic Colonial quarter featuring the Gothic style Santo Domingo Cathedral and the Ozama Fort; the beautiful caves and grottos at Los Tres Ojos and miles of green parklands.

With hundreds of miles of coastline and crystal clear warm waters watersports are naturally very popular. Diving and snorkelling amid the colourful marine life and reefs, surfing, kite-boarding, boogieboarding and sailing being top of the list. The main sport fishing season runs from March to September when barracuda, swordfish and marlin top the bill, following which the waters are still populated with tuna and mahi-mahi.

The numerous national parks of forests and mangroves, lakes and waterfalls provide the perfect setting for eco adventures, horse riding and hiking. Visit the Caves of Wonders near La Romana, the El Limon Waterfall at Samana, the 27 Pools of Damajagua at Puerto Plata or for a real challenge, climb Duarte Peak. There are also 28 golf courses in and around the main holiday regions of the Dominican Republic, all with club hire facilities and opportunities for professional instruction.

The four main holiday regions are:

Puerto Plata which is surrounded by the beach resorts of Bahia Maimon, Cabarete, Cofresi, Playa Dorada and Sosua. This area is perfect for diving and snorkelling and at Cabarete the kite beach is a world famous hotspot for windsurfing, kiteboarding and boogieboarding. Take the Puerto Plata cable car to Isabel de Torres for magnificent views and spend a day at the Ocean World Adventure Park in Cofresi.

The Samana Peninsula where you can stay in Samana or Las Terrenas is popular spot for whale-watching and the mating season runs from January to March. The beautiful blue waters of the Samana Bay are also perfect for diving and snorkelling or you could take a boat trip through the mangroves and rainforests at Los Haitises National Park.

Punta Cana on the south-east corner and the nearby resorts of Uvero Alto, Playa Bavaro, Bayahibe and La Romana. Laze on the beautiful Macao Beach or discover one of the many surfing beaches around La Romana. Visit the Manati Park and watch the sea lion and dolphin shows or take a safari through the countryside of sugar, banana and cocoa plantations, meadows and mountains.

Santo Domingo and the south coast resorts of Boca Chica and Juan Dolio. Take a catamaran cruise to Saona Island or a trip to Enrquillo Lake. The capital of Santo Domingo blends cobbled streets and centuries old Colonial buildings with modern hotels and shopping centres. There are hundreds of restaurants and the nightlife ranges from Latin American concert halls to trendy bars and discos
