The Duna Mar Hotel is right on the beach and has views over the surrounding nature reserve with distance view of Spain. The hotel has limited entertainment but suits a quiet holiday. The town has a range of bars/restaurants all at reasonable prices, again overall quiet. Easy walks to Vila Real (busy town with easy ferry ride into Spain (Ayamonte)) and through pine woods. Easy to visit local towns eg Tavira (Roman Bridge), Castro Marim (Castle).

The Beach is amazing, you could walk for an hour (town of Alagoa) and still not reach half way along it. My wife and I enjoyed not being surrounded by a lot of English (who seem to usually drinking too much when abroad, I should add that a glass of wine only costs 1E and a pint 2; as in a great number of the Algarve resorts, mostly Dutch or locals. To be honest would prefer it if no one else went there and we kept the area as our own little heaven away from home.
We beach is great and very clean. The numerous bars and restaurants in Monte Gordo offer great value for money especially the "tourist menu". We would recommend the "Vale De Jouro" restaurant which offers great food and excellent service. This is a lovely quiet resort especially for the over 50's.

We love Monte Gordo, it's peaceful has good restaurants, 2 small supermarkets, chemist and a brilliant launderette. The main street is no go for vehicles and tiled in small pieces. There's lovely restaurants, bars and a casino (smokers allowed) along the beach and the road near the beach. The beach is very good with a small fishing boat station. It's about 2 miles from another lovely port Villa Real, we always recommend Monte Gordo, we would happily live there!

Popular with the Portuguese. Lack of quality restaurants and not very attractive although Villa Real a short distance away down the road is very pretty on the river which borders Spain and Portugal. Beach is fabulous.

Depends what you want from a resort! If you want relaxation with a most fantastic beach then this is for you. If you want a lively resort with nightclubs and discos then don't come! There are loads of restaurants offering a great selection of three course meals for 10 euro including a drink and you are not long from Spain if you fancy a trip over to there. If you want a great beach, good food at a good price and plenty of bars then give it a try.

Monte Gordo was very quiet, limited choice of food. Cigarettes and currency exchange very difficult to find. We've been there before and it was lively and buoyant, but now it is a 'ghost town'. Shuttle service was very prompt, excellent vehicles and drivers.

Weather is variable and a bit of lottery. Windy days can be a loss to the tourist especially when it rains. However when weather is good 60% of the times the beach is clean and good for long walks.

Loved the resort. The beach was fantastic and went on for miles with beautiful sand which we walked on most days. The sea was clean and cold at first but we soon got use to it. The Nature Trails around both sides of the resort were an extra bonus for anyone who enjoys walking, linking them up with a walk on the beach. I did a bit of running along with many hundreds of other runners in the resort which was ideal and a warm temperature.

My son has now be coming to Monte Gordo for the last seven years at this time of the year, for warm weather training and it was him and his wife who persuaded us to come and try Monte Gordo.
We would certainly love to come back again to the resort and the friendly Portuguese people.

I have visited Monte Gordo in December for the past 7 years, prior to this year just for a week over Christmas. This is the busiest period for the resort. Before and after Christmas it's like a ghost town. It has a very good beach with no one on it. Nearly all the bars close before 10.00. Good bus and rail links with Faro and local towns. In the high season Monte Gordo can be very busy and hot.

Fantastic long beach with fine sand. Plenty of cafes, bars, restaurants. A highlight is the 40-minute walk through the forest to the town of Villa Real do Santo Antonio, which is charming and full of interesting shops, and there is the ferry port for the short crossing of the Guadiana river to Ayiamonte in Spain.

Excellent long clean beaches with many good cuisines on offer. Relaxing and varied days, although the weather can be a major impediment with up to 30% of our two weeks experiencing cloud, rain and even hurricane. If indoor activities are available then the resort can be great.

The area around Monte Gordo, is full of everything we needed and right on the doorstep bars, restaurants, shops, pharmacies, car hire and excursions. We didn't have children with us but would be very confident to take children here. Supermarkets are really well kitted out with
buckets and spades and ball games and inflatables really bursting at the seams with everything for any one in our opinion and the shop keepers can't do enough for you, letting us try before we buy and so friendly, we were very happy with the prices we paid for the things we bought.

Short walk to the beach which is a WOW with board walks and cafe's on the beach plenty of loungers and shades. The sand gently slopes in to the sea, we saw plenty of families enjoying the paddling and swimming and pedalos. Lovely atmosphere. Beautiful soft white sand, and to the right of us were the lovely fishing boats, beach is stunning at sun rise we recommend sunset too.

In the square and along the front was a special experience for us with horse and carriage rides and the flow of people strolling around. Was so nice, locals sitting chatting even a casino for the people who like a flutter, we didn't venture in to there but it looked lovely and had plenty of people going in to play the slots. The gentle flow of families wandering in and out of shops and restaurants through the night was electric; sitting outside and enjoying a meal and a drink great variety too, and watching the world go by. The recommendations we got was incredible, people that kept coming back, we didn't go to the water parks but passed one on our arrival. We can't speak highly enough of Monte Gordo and will definitely be back here, already counting down for next time, we fell in love with this place / hotel, and the people. Loved every minute, will be back.

Great for beach - goes on for miles and hence not too crowded, lots of street cafes where a pint costs £1.80 and a glass of wine 80p and no drunks in sight! Numerous souvenir shops with reasonable prices. Easy access to Villa Real, where there are also numerous souvenir shops and a 15 minute ferry trip to Spain. Nature reserve nearby with numerous birds (storks etc) actually saw a 5ft snake! No wolves however. Fisherman's beach interesting. Gets hotter as June progresses. Both my wife and I enjoy going on walks and visiting local sights, together visiting local bars and having 1 or 2. Monte Gordo suits us fine.

Monte Gordo is a lovely place although there is not a lot to do there. You can go into nearby Vila Real San Antonio where you can get the ferry across to Ayemonte in Spain. The beach in Monte Gordo is beautiful and there are plenty of restaurants and shops in the town. You can take a horse and cart ride around the town which is nice. There is a large Casino there also.

Would we go back to Monte Gordo again? Probably not. We appreciated it was still fairly early in the season, but the resort was very quiet with very limited places to eat, some restaurants had not even opened yet. Ones that were open were not of a very high standard. San Antonio a little further up the coast was beautiful and full of lovely shops, restaurants and cafe's and in easy, flat walking distance, or on a hired bike along it's purpose built cycle track on the side of the main road or through the woods. We did hire bikes and used them for three days and had a lot of fun, you could even cycle/walk to the Spanish border which was also on the cycle track. The best bit about Monte Gordo was the stunning beach, paradise for couples and families alike. If you love the beach, you will love this one!

Monte Gordo is situated 3km from Vila Real, which is on the border with Spain. A short ferry trip across the river Guadiana finds you in Ayemonte in Huelva. The night life in Monte Gordo is low key comprising of restaurants and bars; it also has a casino. It is definitely not for clubbers and is best described as a family resort. There are a lot of sightseeing opportunities. Monte Gordo has good bus and train links to Faro and Tavira. The beach is clean and stretches for miles. Outside of the resorts, you can have long stretches to yourself.

Not a great deal to Monte Gordo town. The beach is fantastic and the town is OK for a stroll around in the evening. The nearby town of St Antonio is very original and unspoilt and we spent a couple of half days exploring. Catch the ferry across the river to Ayemonte in Spain and again an original unspoilt town.

At the time of our visit, the town was still quiet - very early in the holiday season. The beach is fantastic and the weather was beautiful. There is a very limited choice of bars/restaurants, shops etc. but there are bicycles for hire and a regular bus service to neighbouring towns though it stops very early each evening. Not a resort for children and teenagers especially.

The beach is fabulous you can walk for miles. You can also watch the fisherman bring in their catch every morning. The town is easy to walk around as it is flat not like other parts of the Algarve. We like to visit Villa Real de Santa Antonio with its lovely square and shops. The ferry to Ayemonte in Spain leaves from here and is well worth a visit.

Beaches

The resort of Monte Gordo is more or less one big beach and not only is it one of the largest in the Algarve but it also has the warmest waters. This glorious beach is accessible to all which makes it very popular among families. There are walkways and ramps leading to the sand which makes it easy for those with buggies or wheelchairs. There is also other equipment to make the beach even more accessible for those in wheelchairs. There is a lifeguard in attendance in the summer months and there are plenty of watersports available.

There are plenty of cafes and bars on the beach itself and even more, along with shops and restaurants across the road from the beach so you will easily be able to spend the day on or around the beach.

A little further along, you will find Praia de Cacela Velha, a sand pit which is separated from the shore by a lagoon. It is accessible on foot by Manta Rota or you can catch a boat from Sitio da Fabrica. The beach is beautiful but there are no bars or restaurants at all so you would need to take provisions with you.

Things to Do

There are many sports that are popular here such as windsurfing and kite surfing but perhaps one of the most popular activities is cycling. The area is so flat and with plenty of places to hire bikes, it's a great way to see the area. There are plenty of fantastic golf courses in the area too so if golf is your thing then this is the place to be.

There are plenty of boats for trips up the river Guadiana if you prefer to see the area from the water.

If you prefer getting out and about and doing some sightseeing, then there is plenty to see. There are 3 churches in the area which are worth a visit for those interested in historical attractions. There are also galleries and museums for those who want to soak up a little culture.

Out and About

The main road in Monte Gordo is literally covered in shops, cafes and restaurants which is just perfect for any items you may need for your day at the beach or indeed any refreshments you may require during the day.

There are some great restaurants if you want to sample some of the freshly caught seafood or perhaps some more traditional food.

Monte Gordo is quite lively and as well as having some great bars, there is also a nightclub for those who want to party the night away. Another popular spot at night has to be the casino, it's popular with both locals and visitors. As well as the standard slot machines and card tables, there is also the chance to have a meal, see a show or simply dance the night away.

There are several festivals held throughout the year and they can be lots of fun and a great way to see the locals celebrate what is important to them.

Nearby Attractions

If you fancy a day out, take a trip to Faro. There is lots to see here, such as the Praca de Dom Francisco Gomes and the Moorish Old Town or you could simply wander round the shops and markets to see what is on offer.

Lagos is another resort which is worth visiting. The town looks like a moorish palace with definite Arab influence which makes it exotic and exciting. As well as the historic fortifications, there is a lovely marina, waterfront and ancient slave market so there really is plenty to see and do.

The Zoo Marine in Guia is a very popular choice for families with children and is the highlight of many a holiday. Visitors will be able to see dolphins, sea lions, seals, tropical birds and various birds of prey. There is also an aquarium with exotic fish and sharks and there is a 4D cinema too so there is plenty to keep everyone occupied.
