Great for beach - goes on for miles and hence not too crowded, lots of street cafes where a pint costs £1.80 and a glass of wine 80p and no drunks in sight! Numerous souvenir shops with reasonable prices. Easy access to Villa Real, where there are also numerous souvenir shops and a 15 minute ferry trip to Spain. Nature reserve nearby with numerous birds (storks etc) actually saw a 5ft snake! No wolves however. Fisherman's beach interesting. Gets hotter as June progresses. Both my wife and I enjoy going on walks and visiting local sights, together visiting local bars and having 1 or 2. Monte Gordo suits us fine.

Plenty of restaurants/cafe bars but no evening entertainment but suited us. Nice, very polite locals. Close to Vila Real and ferry over border to Spain. Very clean, beautiful beaches. Obligatory dog poop on streets as like Spanish the Portuguese don't clean the mess up and lots of loose dogs about.

Monte Gordo is a lovely place although there is not a lot to do there. You can go into nearby Vila Real San Antonio where you can get the ferry across to Ayemonte in Spain. The beach in Monte Gordo is beautiful and there are plenty of restaurants and shops in the town. You can take a horse and cart ride around the town which is nice. There is a large Casino there also.

Would we go back to Monte Gordo again? Probably not. We appreciated it was still fairly early in the season, but the resort was very quiet with very limited places to eat, some restaurants had not even opened yet. Ones that were open were not of a very high standard. San Antonio a little further up the coast was beautiful and full of lovely shops, restaurants and cafe's and in easy, flat walking distance, or on a hired bike along it's purpose built cycle track on the side of the main road or through the woods. We did hire bikes and used them for three days and had a lot of fun, you could even cycle/walk to the Spanish border which was also on the cycle track. The best bit about Monte Gordo was the stunning beach, paradise for couples and families alike. If you love the beach, you will love this one!

Monte Gordo is situated 3km from Vila Real, which is on the border with Spain. A short ferry trip across the river Guadiana finds you in Ayemonte in Huelva. The night life in Monte Gordo is low key comprising of restaurants and bars; it also has a casino. It is definitely not for clubbers and is best described as a family resort. There are a lot of sightseeing opportunities. Monte Gordo has good bus and train links to Faro and Tavira. The beach is clean and stretches for miles. Outside of the resorts, you can have long stretches to yourself.

Not a great deal to Monte Gordo town. The beach is fantastic and the town is OK for a stroll around in the evening. The nearby town of St Antonio is very original and unspoilt and we spent a couple of half days exploring. Catch the ferry across the river to Ayemonte in Spain and again an original unspoilt town.

At the time of our visit, the town was still quiet - very early in the holiday season. The beach is fantastic and the weather was beautiful. There is a very limited choice of bars/restaurants, shops etc. but there are bicycles for hire and a regular bus service to neighbouring towns though it stops very early each evening. Not a resort for children and teenagers especially.

Monte Gordo very clean friendly. Beach is enormous and is never crowded. Loads of places to eat and all reasonable prices.

Beaches

The resort of Monte Gordo is more or less one big beach and not only is it one of the largest in the Algarve but it also has the warmest waters. This glorious beach is accessible to all which makes it very popular among families. There are walkways and ramps leading to the sand which makes it easy for those with buggies or wheelchairs. There is also other equipment to make the beach even more accessible for those in wheelchairs. There is a lifeguard in attendance in the summer months and there are plenty of watersports available.

There are plenty of cafes and bars on the beach itself and even more, along with shops and restaurants across the road from the beach so you will easily be able to spend the day on or around the beach.

A little further along, you will find Praia de Cacela Velha, a sand pit which is separated from the shore by a lagoon. It is accessible on foot by Manta Rota or you can catch a boat from Sitio da Fabrica. The beach is beautiful but there are no bars or restaurants at all so you would need to take provisions with you.

Things to Do

There are many sports that are popular here such as windsurfing and kite surfing but perhaps one of the most popular activities is cycling. The area is so flat and with plenty of places to hire bikes, it's a great way to see the area. There are plenty of fantastic golf courses in the area too so if golf is your thing then this is the place to be.

There are plenty of boats for trips up the river Guadiana if you prefer to see the area from the water.

If you prefer getting out and about and doing some sightseeing, then there is plenty to see. There are 3 churches in the area which are worth a visit for those interested in historical attractions. There are also galleries and museums for those who want to soak up a little culture.

Out and About

The main road in Monte Gordo is literally covered in shops, cafes and restaurants which is just perfect for any items you may need for your day at the beach or indeed any refreshments you may require during the day.

There are some great restaurants if you want to sample some of the freshly caught seafood or perhaps some more traditional food.

Monte Gordo is quite lively and as well as having some great bars, there is also a nightclub for those who want to party the night away. Another popular spot at night has to be the casino, it's popular with both locals and visitors. As well as the standard slot machines and card tables, there is also the chance to have a meal, see a show or simply dance the night away.

There are several festivals held throughout the year and they can be lots of fun and a great way to see the locals celebrate what is important to them.

Nearby Attractions

If you fancy a day out, take a trip to Faro. There is lots to see here, such as the Praca de Dom Francisco Gomes and the Moorish Old Town or you could simply wander round the shops and markets to see what is on offer.

Lagos is another resort which is worth visiting. The town looks like a moorish palace with definite Arab influence which makes it exotic and exciting. As well as the historic fortifications, there is a lovely marina, waterfront and ancient slave market so there really is plenty to see and do.

The Zoo Marine in Guia is a very popular choice for families with children and is the highlight of many a holiday. Visitors will be able to see dolphins, sea lions, seals, tropical birds and various birds of prey. There is also an aquarium with exotic fish and sharks and there is a 4D cinema too so there is plenty to keep everyone occupied.
