Beaches

The nearest beaches are in Puerto Santa Maria, approx 25 minutes drive away from the city centre. There are 2 beaches of wide golden sand lying either side of the River Guadalete and a smaller, quieter beach next to the Puerto Sherry marina. For surfing head around the coast, towards Rota, to Las Redes beach.

Things to Do

Take a walking tour of the city, to see a wealth of historic architecture, churches including Jerez Cathedral and the many 18th and 19th century palaces. The Alcazar, with its lovely gardens and Camera Obscura, neighbours the Jerez Cathedral and is centrally located close to the shopping streets. The Permartin Palace, which houses the Andalucian Flamenco Centre sits amid the narrow cobbled streets near the Plaza San Juan.

The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art is set in lovely grounds and offers tours of the stables where you can see the beautiful horses as well as spectacular shows. And of course no visit would be complete without a visit to at least one of the Bodegas.

There are a number of museums to visit including the clock museum (The Palace of Time) and the art gallery (Joaquin Rivero). You can learn the history of Jerez wines at the Mystery of Jerez and of bullfighting at Museo Turino.

If you like the atmosphere of local festivities you might choose to visit for Holy Week, the week long May Horse Fair or the Flamenco Festival.

Out and About

The narrow streets hold plenty of charm and there are many beautiful plazas and tree lined avenues to explore. Relax in a terrace cafe at the Plaza del Arenal and watch the fountains; shop the designer boutiques and wander down the busy shopping street of Calle Larga which is lined with orange trees.

On the western edge of the city, next to the Karting Track, you can find a hypermarket and modern out-of-town retail park with national brand names.

Nearby Attractions

The city of Cadiz sits on the peninsula across the bay from Puerto Santa Maria and offers a wealth of historic sights as well as wide golden beaches. It is approx 30km from Jerez. Nova Sancti Petri is approx 50km south and Rota is approx 30km coast bound to the west.
