How Hot?

If visiting the country's capital city of Washington you may find the summer months particularly uncomfortable with high temperatures and high levels of humidity, July and August average between the high eighties and low nineties.

With moderate temperatures coupled with cool breezes the spring and autumn seasons are a good time to visit; April and October average highs of 60ºF.

Winter can be cold, where the average annual snowfall is around 17 inches and the average high temperature in January is 43ºF and lows of 24ºF.

Out and About

Sandwiched between the states of Maryland and Virginia is the USA's capital city, Washington D.C. The city has so much to see, with plenty of museums, memorials and monuments, and you never know you might even catch a (unlikely) glimpse of the President.

Many of the city's museums, monuments and memorials can be found on the two-mile stretch of the National Mall, situated on the banks of the Potomac River, with the US Capitol to its east and the Washington Monument to its west. The Lincoln, Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorials are all home here as well as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, the National World War II Memorial and the Korean War Veterans Memorial. Museums on the Mall include the National Museum of American History, National Museum of Natural History, National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, the Smithsonian Castle and the National Gallery of Art.

There are so many 'must see' sights in Washington so whether you want an in-depth visit or happy with a sighting as you pass by on the tour bus here are some of Washington's most popular tourist spots; Library of Congress (Capitol Hill), US Capitol Building (pre-booking essential), the White House where a select number of rooms are open to the public (for foreign visitors a request must be made via your embassy in Washington, DC), the International Spy Museum and the National Museum of American History.

Out for Lunch!

The District of Columbia (Washington D.C,) borders with the states of Virginia and Maryland both of which both are next to the Chesapeake Bay which is famous for its blue crabs. The blue crab can be found on many of the menus in restaurants around town, in particular the Maryland crab soup and Maryland crab cakes.

Another popular item is the Senate Bean Soup, a classic American recipe with some history behind it, due to being served daily in the Senate Dining Room since around 1903.

As the capital of the USA the city of Washington has dining options to satisfy all tastes and budgets. There are numerous restaurants and diner/cafes offering everything from all day breakfast menus and hamburgers etc to cuisines from all over the world.

Whilst roaming the streets of Washington lookout for the many food trucks which are popping up all over the city often specialising in one particular fare such as the lobster truck, Korean barbecue and the burrito van.
