Carvoeiro, Algarve, Portugal

Carvoeiro was once a sleepy fishing village but these days it is a popular family-friendly resort. There are many shops, bars and restaurants to be found among the streets whilst the square is the place to relax with a drink and watch the folk dancers and singers perform. The beach is set in a pretty bay, ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

The beaches were beautiful and the cliffs stunning. There was a wide variety of restaurants that served great food at reasonable prices.

I have never been to this resort and definitely missed a trick. Plenty of restaurants and bars, a short walk down to the beach and plenty of shops. Not over expensive given how low the euro is currently. I would come back in a heart beat.

Beaches

The little sandy beach in Carvoeiro is situated in a sheltered cove and is just perfect for sunbathing and swimming. The beach spreads out in front of the town square, where there are many bars and cafes. There is wheelchair access to the beach and also a selection of stalls around the square should you need anything for your day at the beach. Pedaloes and jet skis are available at the beach so there is plenty to keep everyone occupied.

There are lots of larger beaches and little bays within 10 minutes drive of Carvoeiro.

Things to Do

A great way to see the resort is to jump on board the tourist train that will take you on a 30 minute trip to the resort of Rocha Prava and back again. The train leaves every 40 minutes between 10am and 10pm. Times may vary depending on season.

If you enjoy walking, venture up to the Cabo de Carvoeiro lighthouse which can be found on one of the many cliff walks in the area. You will also find the remains of the Fort of Senhora da Conceicao and the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Encarnacao which was destroyed in 1775 and rebuilt again in 1942 and more recently, 1965.

As well as a range of watersports at the beach and two diving schools, there is also tennis, golf and horse riding available in Carvoeiro.

There are also a lot of boat trips available, from trips to the nearby caves, a little dolphin spotting or simply a leisurely trip along the coastline.

Out and About

As Carvoeiro is so popular, it has many shops to cater for its visitors so you should be able to find what you are looking for. There is also a large supermarket on the outskirts of the town which offers a wider range of products.

There is no shortage of bars, cafes and bars in the resort so you should find something to your liking. Many of the bars and restaurants are within easy walking distance of the centre and offer a wide range of food. You will find many traditional Portuguese restaurants but as the resort is very family orientated, there will be plenty of options for little ones too.

There is a decent selection of pubs, music bars and discos to choose from but if you want a wider choice then head to nearby Portimao, where you will find plenty of lively music bars, nightclubs and even casinos.

The summer can be very busy in Carvoeiro and there are lots of festivals going on from June through to September. The festivals celebrate a whole range of things but you can certainly ensure there will be plenty of entertainment, live music and fun for all the family.

Nearby Attractions

Slide and Splash Water Park in Lagoa is open from April to October and offers great fun for all the family. The park is said to be one of the biggest waterparks in Europe and offers a variety of slides and attractions for everyone to enjoy.

Zoo Marine in Guia is also a great day out, offering many different attractions and activities and even the opportunity to swim with dolphins. The park can get busy so it is advisable to pre book the dolphin experience.

For something a little more relaxing, visit Silves. Silves is just lovely and many an hour can be spent wandering round the town and enjoying the Moorish Castle and riverside walks. There are lots of pavement cafes too if you require a little refreshment. There are boat trips available up the river too so there is plenty to do.

Another popular day out is Krazy World which is about 30 minutes drive from Carvoeiro. The park has mini golf, a swimming pool, quad bikes, pony rides, a petting farm and crocodile park. There are loads of other things to see and do so it is certainly worth a visit.
