You've Helped Raise 3000 Pounds To Grant Seriously Unwell Children's Wishes - Thank you!

Posted by Chris Clarkson, 14th Jan 2016

This is a blog post with a bit of a difference, because it's not about a survey we've done or anything to do with holiday advice. We felt a big need to say a huge thank you to our customers, as you have helped to raise more than £3,000 for charity.

Towards the end of summer last year, we partnered with www.raysofsunshine.org.uk, a charity which helps to grant the wishes of children with serious and life limiting illnesses. If you've booked a holiday with us since we formed the partnership, you will have been presented with the option towards the end of the process to donate an amount of your choice to Rays of Sunshine.

10% of you generously chose to donate to the incredibly worthy cause and, as of the end of December, we'd been able to give £3,363.92 to Rays of Sunshine - all because you're all so lovely!

Already in January, we've received enough donations to take that over the £4,000 mark and we think it's going to be our best month for donations yet!

The money our customers have donated so far has been used to fulfil two wishes. The first was for a seriously ill five-year-old from Crewe named Lewis who is living with Burkitt's Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system which he was diagnosed with in 2014 when he was just four years old.

Lewis has had to endure surgery and intensive chemotherapy, so he has had to spend a lot of his time in hospital away from family and friends. Rays of Sunshine used a portion of the money raised by sunshine.co.uk customers to grant Lewis' wish to go to Disneyland Paris with his family.

Since then, a second wish has been granted using money donated by our customers; this time for an 8-year-old named Vincent from Ramsey who is living with Cystic Fibrosis and Cerebral Palsy. Vincent's wish was to own his own set of bagpipes, an instrument he has been learning to play since March 2015 and Rays of Sunshine used £1,000 of the money you've helped to raise to provide him with a set.

Due to his condition, Vincent has to take daily medicine and do regular respiratory physiotherapy. Since learning the bagpipes, his parents have been advised that Vincent's lung function has increased and he now dreams of one day playing at the Highland Cathedral.

The work that the charity does is phenomenal and we're so happy that - through our customers - we're able to be a part of the work the team does to brighten the lives of children who are very ill. The wishes our customers' donations have helped to grant are simply fantastic. Thank you to each and every one of you who has donated.

Jane Sharpe, CEO of Rays of Sunshine, had a few words to say about your generosity too:

"We've been overwhelmed by the support of sunshine.co.uk's customers who, to date, have donated over £3,000 and granted some very magical wishes. We're absolutely thrilled to be working with sunshine.co.uk and we look forward to bringing even more sunshine into seriously ill children's lives this year. On behalf of Rays of Sunshine and all of the children that sunshine.co.uk's customers have helped, we can't thank you enough."
