Britons’ Bad Holiday Habits Revealed!

Posted by Rebecca Gill, 4th Apr 2017

Sometimes Britons get bad press for their antics whilst holidaying abroad, so we thought we'd run a survey to see how Britons would rate their behaviour, out of 10. We surveyed a total of 1,966 Britons aged 18 and over, all of whom stated that they'd been abroad at least once in the past year.

Those In The North West Behave The Worst

We started out by asking all respondents to rate their behaviour between 1 and 10 on their last holiday, as well as asking them to state what region they currently live in (to allow us to determine patterns).

Turns out, those in the North West (such as Manchester and Liverpool) rate themselves as low as '2'.

On the opposite end, those in the South East (such as Brighton and Canterbury) would rate themselves on average '9' - making them the best-behaved region of the UK.

Urinating In The Pool Is Surprisingly Common

We then gave everyone taking our survey a list of bad holiday habits and asked them to honestly confess to all those that they found themselves doing on their last holiday. Here's the shocking results:

Urinating in the pool - 71%
Break 'reserving the sunbed' rules - 68%
Urinating in the sea - 66%
Fidgeting on plane/kicking seat in front - 52%
Not tipping housekeeping staff - 41%
Being drunk and disorderly - 39%
Stealing items from room/hotel - 35%
Breaking items in the room/hotel - 27%
Creating noise disturbances in the hotel - 22%
Being unfaithful to partner/cheating - 12%

But Why?

Finally, all those taking part in the survey who initially rated themselves a '5' or lower in terms of their behaviour abroad were asked if they were worse abroad than they would be at home - almost all of those (88%) confessed that yes, their behaviour was worse abroad.

When we asked them why, over half (53%) admitted that being on holiday meant they could 'do what they wanted'.

Well... this is certainly going to make a few people think twice before jumping into the pool as soon as they arrive at their holiday destination. It makes you wonder just how much pee is going to be in the pool, that's for sure.

We Britons already have a pretty bad rep in some countries, and it's clear to see why from the results of this study. But it wouldn't be hard to tone the bad behaviour down a little - just because you're paying for the luxury of a holiday, doesn't mean you can act as outrageously as you wish.
