50 Shades Trilogy Tops List of Summer Holiday Reads

Posted by Sue Anderson, 10th Jul 2012

Our latest poll has revealed that the popular erotic novel trilogy '50 Shades of Grey' has topped the list of books that either have been or will be read over the summer by female holidaymakers heading abroad.

It would appear that the erotic novel trilogy is only set to grow in popularity, as it's the most popular choice of summer holiday read by female Britons heading abroad this year.

We polled 1,038 adult women from the UK, each of whom had either been on holiday abroad since May or planned to go before the end of September. Respondents were asked about their reading habits whilst away, or what books they planned to take on holiday with them if they hadn't been already.

89% of the women polled said they had read or were planning to read 50 Shades of Grey on holiday

When asked if they had read on their holiday or intended to read when they go away, 89% of those polled said 'yes'. They were then asked what books they had read, or planned to read, whilst on holiday and told to select from a list of possible answers; selecting 'other' if their choice didn't appear.

According to the poll, the most popular holiday reads by female Britons abroad this year are as follows:

1. 50 Shades Trilogy (one or all), E.L. James 38%

2. The Hunger Games (one or all), Suzanna Collins 29%

3. Twilight Saga (one or all), Stephanie Meyer 16%

4. Sweet Revenge: The Intimate Life of Simon Cowell, Tom Bower 7%

5. Kill Alex Cross, James Patterson 2%

Respondents tended to read an average of 3 books whilst on holiday

When asked how many books they tended to get through on holiday, if any, the average answer stated by respondents was '3'.

57% said they were more likely to read erotic books whilst on holiday

Those taking part in the poll were also asked if they were more likely to read certain types of books on holiday than they were at home, to which 42% said 'yes'. When asked what sort of books these would be, 57% said they were more likely to read 'erotic' books on holiday than they were at home.

After seeing all the talk about 50 Shades of Grey, we weren't all that surprised to see it take the number one spot in our poll! Holidays are the perfect time to relax, and what better way to do it than by the pool with a good book?!
