Cheap Holidays to St. Kitts
With it's blend of sea, sunlight, air and vegetation, the atmosphere in St Kitts is amazing. With development being kept to a minimum, St Kitts remains unspoilt and un-crowded.
Visitors can take tours among the tropical forest areas, seaside lagoons and lava formations or simply relax by the beautiful warm waters and sandy beaches.
Changing very little during the year, the average temperature on St Kitts is 79ºF, humidity is low and the constant northeast trade-winds help to keep the island cool.
Rainy and hurricane season is July to November, though even during this period it can still be warm and sunny.
While the likelihood of a direct hit is small, if travelling during hurricane season, we recommend you check your travel insurance policy before you leave, and shop around if necessary to make sure you have the necessary cover.
Out and About
The Caribbean island of St Kitts is easy to explore; it is just 37km long and 8km wide, with a main road running all the way around the coast. There are plenty of options to see the mountainous and wooded ravines of the islands interior, including a scenic tour onboard the St Kitts Scenic Railway, ATV and colourful bus tours. In the evening you could take a romantic sunset dinner cruise or party the night away along 'the Strip' at Frigate Bay.
The beaches on St Kitts range from fine white sands to black volcanic sands, backed by tropical scenery. For white sands, water-sports and beach bars with a Caribbean party atmosphere head for Frigate Bay or for seclusion and beautiful views over the neighbouring island of Nevis, choose the long white sands of Cockleshell Bay.
The island has a number of wrecks, reefs and dive sites and there is a National Marine Park at Sandy Point. The colourful marine life at Friars Bay and Coconut Tree Reef is accessible even to new divers and those with a little more experience can enjoy the swim-throughs and corals at Devils Cavern or the amazing Wreck of the River Taw.
In addition to snorkelling and diving, you can also go kayaking, kite-surfing, sailing, deep sea fishing, take a relaxing coastline cruise or hire a jet ski. On land leisure activities range from zip-lining, hiking and horse-riding through the rainforests and plantations to a leisurely round of golf at Royal St Kitts Golf Club, which overlooks both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
The capital of Basseterre is well worth a visit both for shopping and historical attractions. Here you will find duty free shops at the Circus as well as locally produced hand crafted items, art works and beautiful batik printed fabrics in the shops and at the Craft House. Step back in time at Independence Square and imagine its dreadful days as a slave trade market; see the old Treasury Building, the Georgian House and Berkely Memorial.
From Basseterre you can take a ferry across to Charlestown on the neighbouring island of Nevis and, this scenic journey takes just 45 minutes.
Other historic visitor attractions around the island include Romney Manor and Gardens, Fairview Great House and Botanical Gardens, the 17th century Charles Fort at Cleverlys Hill and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park.
Out for Lunch!
The St Kitts national dish is stewed salt fish with spicy plantains, coconut dumplings and seasoned breadfruit. Other popular dishes include goat water stew (made with goat, breadfruit, papaya and dumplings in a tomato-based stew), conch chowder, conch salad, cook-up (which combines chicken, pig tail, saltfish, vegetables with rice and pigeon peas), conkies (similar to tamales), rice and beans, and chicken curry. With plenty of coastline, seafood is always on the menu.
International cuisine such as Italian, Chinese, Indian and of course Caribbean can be found at the many upscale restaurants along with plenty of seafood choices. Frigate Bay has a number of tourist restaurants including pizzerias, burger joints and beachside bars. Along the quieter north coast a number of converted old plantation houses provide the perfect choice for a romantic night out.
