Environment

Experience an authentic Cape Verdean atmosphere on the island of Sao Vicente, a blend of flat plains and volcanic peaks, fishing villages and hiking trails, surfing beaches and secluded coves.

Things to Do

From November to June the soft sand beaches and warm waters of Sao Pedro, on the west coast, Calhau on the east coast and Salamansa on the north coast are ideal for kite surfing, windsurfing and wave riding.

In contrast, the natural lagoon at Baias das Gatas, on the north coast, is ideal for bathing and snorkelling or you can just take lunch in one of the beach restaurants. Baias das Gatas beach is also the venue for the annual music festival which takes place in August.

The Mindelo Carnival is a riot of colour and takes place in February.

Out and About

The capital of Mindelo, is set around the sweeping Mindelo Bay and backed by mountain views. Stroll around the city's pretty cobbled streets, lined with colourful Portuguese colonial architecture by day and soak up the sounds of live music in the bars and restaurants by night. Relax on the sandy Laginha Beach and admire the views to Santo Antao or, from the modern Marina, take a sport fishing trips for marlin, tuna, wahoo and sharks.

Mindelo port, Porto Grande, is frequented by cargo vessels as well as cruise ships. There is also a ferry across to the neighbouring island of Santo Antao, where you can spend the day hiking and exploring it's green and mountainous landscapes.

Mindelo offers a number of historic buildings, the Governors Palace, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, the Town Hall, the Mindelo Cultural Centre and the replica of the Tower of Belem. Stroll around the lively fish market and the Mindelo Market, both selling fresh produce every morning; visit the Museum of Traditional Art and admire panoramic views over the bay and the city from the Mindelo Fort.
