Map of Runaway Bay
Runaway Bay is a relaxed beach resort, perfect for just lazing on the white sands and swimming in the warm, shallow turquoise waters of the Caribbean. The long stretches of beach mainly belong to the hotels which also offer a variety of watersports including hobie cats and kayaks, windsurfing and water skiing. The hotel diving centres provide opportunities for scuba diving around the coral reefs and wrecks.
Discovery Bay is approx 7km away and here you can relax at the family friendly Puerto Seco beach amid picturesque scenery and browse the historic artefacts at Columbus Park.
Things to Do
The Green Grotto Caves (4km), used in the Bond film Live & Let Die, are located between Runaway Bay and Discovery Bay. Discover tales of other historic uses of the caves with a guided tour through the deep caverns and rock formations to the crystal clear Grotto Lake.
Cranbrook Flower Forest (20km) is set in 130 acres and comprises a working nursery, 40 acres of landscaped gardens, a children's play area and a small museum housed in a 200 year old former mill. Here you can stroll along the river and through the gardens, take a dip in the pools, have a game of croquet or zip-line through the forest.
The charming, World Heritage town of Falmouth (39km) is approx half an hour drive away and offers historic and architectural interest dating back to it's prosperous days in the 1800's when it was a busy trading port and surrounded by wealthy sugar plantations.
Out and About
The 18 hole Superclubs Golf Course is located in the heart of the resort and welcomes guests. Tuition is available and there is also a driving range, a practice green, a chipping area and a pro shop.
Supermarkets, bars and restaurants can be found along the coast road but most of the hotels in the resort are all inclusive and tend to provide much of the entertainment.
Step back in time with visits to the small towns of St Ann's Bay (to the east) and Rio Bueno (to the west), both of which are approx 15-20 minutes away and both of which claim to be the first landing point of Christopher Columbus.
At the village of Martha Brae (42km), an island on the Martha Brae River, you can take a relaxing 3 mile downstream trip on a bamboo raft through the tropical jungle.
Runaway Bay is located approx half an hour drive from the beach resort of Ocho Rios (25km) where there are gardens and waterfalls to explore. It is also just an hour from Montego Bay (73km), known as the tourist capital where you can enjoy a day on the beach and an evening on the Hip Strip.
