This is our 3rd visit to the same hotel and we enjoy it every time. It's not 5 star but the hotel is clean and tidy with everything you require. The staff are warm and friendly and it's in a great part of Marrakesh.

I stayed 14 nights half board at the Oudaya having got a fantastic deal with Sunshine holidays.

The hotel is located on a side street off Avenue Mohamed V which is the principal route to Place Jemma El Fna and the medina/souks. It's a leisurely 25 minute walk to the city centre but you can catch a No1 bus on Mohamed V for 4 dirhams (about 30p). I only used the petit taxis once - on my return to the airport from Jemma when the taxi driver took me and a back packer for the same price at the No 19 airport bus - 30 dirhams each, obviously a no brainer. Taxis from the airport to the city are apparently extortionate, so I booked a transfer and was taken to the Oudaya, within 5 minutes of arriving at the Travel Republic desk, by car with only one other passenger. Not bad for £4.50.

I paid £18 a night at the Oudaya and got good value for my money. I stayed half board because it was less than £2 a night extra compared to B&B. Breakfast was pretty dire - hard boiled eggs, tomatoes and olives with all the bread and cakes you could eat. I suspect the orange juice was diluted with water on occasion. Coffee and tea are dispensed by a waiter from vacuum flasks and are not always terribly hot. The official rate for breakfast is 50 dirhams and is not worth it.

Dinner is a far more pleasant experience - waiter service, choice of 2 courses for starter, mains and dessert. The official rate is 180 dirhams which is over priced but clearly worth the 2 quid I paid via Sunshine. I found the meals excellent.

The Oudaya has a strict ban on bringing drinks or food into the hotel and have signs to that effect at each of its 2 entrance lobbies. Everybody ignores this but you have to smuggle stuff in and take the empties out each time. The cheapest place for wine and spirits is the Carrefour supermarket which is part of the Shopping Centre on Mohamed V about 5 minutes walk away. For a muslim country I was amazed at how cheap the alcohol was compared to the UK.

The hotel is a bit battered but clean and everything worked. There is a swimming pool but it never gets any sun and I suspect it's used as a plunge pool in high summer when temperatures in Marrakech can hit 45 celsius.

Staff are helpful and friendly and gave me no grief. For the money I paid, I can't fault the Oudaya - Moroccan breakfasts are universally dire as I have found in visits to Agadir in the last 2 years.
