This historic town is now a vibrant and bustling centre, home to plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. Visitors will love the gardens and tropical plants that can be found throughout the town along with the cobbled streets and elegant squares.
Funchal is the capital city of Madeira and is situated in the south between Santa Cruz and Camara de Lobos. The city centre is small enough to walk around and there is an attractive waterside promenade and the Old Town offers visitors a great choice of restaurants, bars and shops.
The transfer time to Funchal is 30 minutes.
Madeira has many beaches however they are black volcanic sand and most are pebbled. There are however two sandy beaches at Calheta and Machico and there is a 9km golden beach at Porto Santo.

There are many historical sights to see in and around Funchal including the Jardin Do Palheiro which is a colonial style manor house in beautiful gardens, Madeira Botanical Gardens and the Sao Lourenco Palace.
There is a Santa Clara Convent and Se Cathedral which is the centre point of Funchal and the most visited monument.
A large market - Mercado Dos Lavradores - can be found in this historic buildings and sells a range of fruits and vegetables.
The Funchal Cable Car is a great way to see Funchal and offers fabulous views above the city.
