Good place to go for food, the city lounge was our favourite bar with a couple of eateries outside, only one bad experience and that was Eddies café, afraid to say awful food and very poor service. The restaurant right next door gave a better service and in my opinion better food, closed Sundays hence the Eddies experience. Have fun we did!

Very beautiful, easy to walk around. Good shopping and restaurants. Good for those who like historical attractions. Electric cabs good for getting around and quite cheap compared to Taxis. No busses inside Valletta old town. Stunning cathedral. Great views.

Great place to explore by foot as very compact, museums and an abundance of great places to eat. If wanting to explore further afield the bus system is cheap reliable and not confusing.

Valletta is amazing and the heart of the city is surrounded by open-air cafes and elegant historical buildings. The main Republic Street is filled with interesting shops and several small shopping arcades. The city has everything to offer the traveller, history, culture and above all, the people.

Malta is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable locations to stay, with everyone able to speak English, beautiful scenery, steeped in history, lots to see and do and driving on the left, in their own unique style.

I did find a substantial number of shop staff being less than enthusiastic toward their tourist customers - which was a bit disappointing considering that tourists are the countries primary source of income. I know that is not unusual for tourist hotspots but considering Malta's history I have noticed a decline on their hospitality to UK visitors over the years of our previous visits. That said and done, we do love Malta, Valletta and all the island has to offer. Been there 3 times in the last 8 years, if that is anything to go by.

Bus services are excellent and easy from Valletta - 15 euros for 12 trips to any destination - UK public transport should take note...and learn. Enjoy!!

There is something for everyone in this city, from just people watching at one of the sidewalk cafes with a coffee and slice to visiting the many churches and museums. The nightlife ranges from local bars to excellent restaurants where the food is varied and very tasty (weight watchers beware). The views of the Grand Harbour are a marvel to see with all of Malta as a backdrop. Ferries around the harbour are frequent and priced reasonably, water taxies back and forward to Sliema also frequent and cheap.

Very old city with lots of history. The city itself is small (we walked around the perimeter) but very hilly in places with some pavements being all steps. Museums and art gallery very enjoyable and the architecture of many of the old buildings was very interesting. Wouldn't say there is anything for kids to do. There is a daily market and quite a few shops. Foods prices (and souvenirs) seemed ok but everything else was quite pricey. Enjoyed Malta as a whole (great if you're into history) and very glad we did it but don't think there is enough going on for a second visit.

So pleased we stayed in Valletta and not one of the resorts. The quirky narrow streets full of hidden treasures, lots of history, good restaurants and wine bars. We took a horse and carriage ride, enjoyed the wonderful views from the historic bell tower, all the ancient buildings seemed so clean as if they had just been refurbished. There is a large bus station where you can get to all parts of the island for just 1.50 euro. We took the bus to the craft village but were a bit disappointed as it was just Nissan huts full of souvenirs. We had hoped to see glass blowing but they were just turning the glass into objects. As far as Valletta is concerned would love to go back, so much more to see and we didn't have time for a trip to Gozo.

Valletta has a fascinating history particularly with it's close ties to Britain. Much enjoyed the Knights of Malta places. St Johns is very special and there is plenty to see regarding the 1942 siege which is well presented. First class Maritime Museum. Shopping good and hassle free. Worth taking the time to drive around Island. Excellent fish restaurants at water front and restaurants and drink much cheaper than most of the Med. Our transfers were well done and we will return to explore more.

Enjoyed the Christmas cribs, lights, a concert in St James Cavalier Centre and the general buzz. Local buses were excellent. Coffees and drinks were reasonable in the bars. I felt very safe and welcomed. Lots to do and see. I will return to see Gozo and more of the sights.

Beaches

Valletta sits between two historic, natural harbours; Marsamxett Harbour to the north and the Grand Harbour to the south, with the beautiful blue Mediterranean in between. The city does not have any beaches, although there are some sunbathing rocks eastward of the Sliema Ferries. However, the golden sands of Golden Bay (20km) or Mellieha Bay (26km) are easily accessible and both offer water-sports.

Things to Do

Surrounded by water and well preserved 16th century fortifications, the narrow streets of this small city are lined with balconied buildings and packed with historic treasures and visitor attractions. Take a harbour cruise to view the fortifications surrounding the city and discover the history of the Grand Harbour; spend the evening on a romantic sunset cruise or the entire day sailing around the coast of Malta.

Discover the richly ornate and opulent interior of the magnificent St John's Cathedral, it's artworks and informative museum and; browse the well furnished rooms of the privately owned Casa Rocca Piccola Palace and it's WW2 bomb shelters.

Within the city streets you will also find many interesting museums including the Lascaris War Rooms, The National War Museum, the Armoury Museum and the National Museum of Fine Arts. Or, watch history come to life at The Valletta Experience, Malta 5D, Valletta Living History and The Saluting Battery.

Out and About

Republic Street and Merchant Street run parallel through the heart of the city and here you will find the daily street market as well as a good mix of independent stores and high street names. There are plenty of coffee shops and cafes, wine bars and nice restaurants; enjoy an evening meal near the Palace or lunch at the prestigious Valletta Waterfront, next to the cruise port. Nightlife is mostly relaxing but if you want to party 'til dawn, the Paceville clubs at St Julians Bay are just a taxi ride away (9.5km).

When you need a break from sightseeing, relax in one of the city gardens. The Upper and Lower Barracca Gardens overlook the Grand Harbour; Hastings Garden overlooks the Marsamxett Harbour and the Argotti Gardens lie in between, in the Floriana district.

Nearby Attractions

The bus station is located by the City Gate and all inland towns and coastal resorts are accessible from Valletta. Boat trips to the neighbouring islands of Gozo and Comino are also readily available.

Other cultural attractions on the island include the Palazzo Parisio & Gardens at Naxxar and the San Anton Gardens at Attard; the archaeological sites of the Mnajdra Temples and the Tarxien Temples and; the old cities of Mdina, Mosta and Rabat.

For family fun you could spend a day at the Splash & Fun Water Park or swim with the dolphins at the neighbouring Malta Marine Park; discover the tropical birds and the birds of prey and at BirdPark Malta and the Malta Falconry Centre or, stroll around the film set and meet the characters at Popeye Village.
