Sliema Hotels Malta
Sliema was once a small fishing town that has developed into a thriving tourist destination. There are no sandy beaches in the resort but there are plenty of Lidos to be found on the seafront which provide sunbeds, umbrellas and refreshments.

It was very windy whilst we were there so we couldn't go in the sea or snorkel as we had hoped. The buses are a little unreliable.

Lots to see and do in the area, plenty of places to eat and drink. The Brew with its micro brewery is a good eatery and the beers are excellent. Ta Kris is one of the best eateries in Sliema only 5 minutes walk from the hotel, but you have to book. Bus and ferry tickets are good value for money and the public transport is excellent.

The promenade was surrounded by building work and hammer drills were being used all of the time. There were at least six cranes in operation even on a Sunday. The resort itself was extremely crowded.

A lively resort with plenty of facilities and easy access by ferry or bus to Valletta. Many excellent, good value restaurants and cafés. Away from the waterfront, many of the footpaths are narrow or in need of repair which can make it difficult for those with mobility problems. The local people are very welcoming.

Very busy and not relaxing at all, noisy day and night, a lot of traffic. Not much for children to do, open top tour busses and boat cruises were good but not for children on hot days. Plenty of choice for restaurants but expensive and food is not cooked to restaurant high standards and staff all seem to be very grumpy.

Great time at splash and fun water park, and Mediterraneo animal park - dolphins, parrots amazing! But lack of air con and choice of simple food was missing and a lot of waiting in the sun. You would think as a family based company they would make sure comfort was a priority.

Great location, which is the main reason we return to Sliema so often. A short walk to the boat trip and Valletta ferry terminals, plenty of public transport options on the door step, lots of good and good value, restaurants within walking distance. No "beach" just a rocky shoreline, but plenty of flat rocks to lay out on.

Plenty of restaurants nearby. The small pub (Plough and Anchor) is about 20 metres away on the main road. It was small but friendly and had an amazing choice of whiskies. This end of Sliema is closer to St Julians than the main very built up centre of Sliema. Traffic is heavy where ever you are, but fortunately drives on the left as in the UK.

Plenty of cruises available here; we also use the Sliema/Valletta ferry to go to Valletta rather than the bus, it's more scenic, not cramped and quite reasonably priced. Plenty of malls and other shops to keep the wife happy. Lots of restaurants/cafes to choose from. We enjoy a drink and meal at the Black Gold Saloon on Sliema front. We used to spend a lot of time in Bugibba in St Pauls bay but it has gone downhill in recent years and quite shabby now, so we now stay in Sliema which is far better.

Beautiful resort, quite chilly this time of year (New Years). The wind was very cold, still sunny but we had to buy a jacket in one of the many shops, not too expensive. A gorgeous place to visit. We've booked again.

Sliema is a very popular place, amongst all ages. Lots of restaurants, pubs and shops. There are some nice rocky beach strips, you can use. Also lots of recreation for kids, in the playgrounds. The beach promenade is very nice both for walking or jogging. It goes for many kilometres, with stunning view of the ocean. The prices are a bit higher, if you compare to Kappara or San Gwann areas.

Sliema is a pleasant cosmopolitan town with plenty of varied restaurants. It is next door to the capital Valletta which is accessible via a ferry or the many busses. The bus services are excellent, we travelled all around the island on them. You will have to go to Valletta for serious shopping, Sliema's town centre shopping area is small with a limited number of expensive shops. Beaches are few and far between in Malta which consists mainly of rock. There are several cruise companies providing a multitude of cruises to places all around the Island operating from Sliema harbour. There are also several open top busses providing various tours around the Island.

Apartments were in a part of Sliema called Gziro. Plenty of eating places around. Again everyone was so nice. Bus stop straight across the road from the apartments. So handy, as everything centres round taking bus to Valetta and then going to wherever you want on the island. A lot of changes since I was in Malta 9 years ago. Beautiful shopping centre called The Point only a short walk from the apartments. With Malta now in the EU you can see a lot of money is being spent on upgrading shops etc. New buses are good and regular.

The eastern area of Sliema, where the Fortina Hotel is located, is more dedicated to high end shopping and more expensive restaurants. As you travel west around the bay the pubs and restaurants become more acceptable. Although most bars have background music, none had any live music or local Maltese entertainment.

Sliema is a very vibrant holiday resort with some excellent restaurants/bars. Swimming is off the rocks which can be a little daunting. Excellent links to the capital (buses/ferry). All boat trips to sundry locations (Grand Harbour, Gozo, Comino and around the islands) begin and end from this town.

We loved the walk to St Julians and the ferry crossing to Valetta, it was a very central place to stay, didn't really like the resort it was a bit like Blackpool on the front we struggled to find nice places to eat. Ok if you want McDonald's and KFC places.

Beaches
Sliema sits on a peninsula flanked by St Julians Bay, the Mediterranean Sea and the Marsamxett Harbour. The promenade runs around most of the resort and the 'beaches' are comprised of large flat rocks, perfect for sunbathing on and taking a dip into the clear blue waters. The waters are great for swimming and snorkelling but if you prefer a pool, there are a couple of Lidos too. Needless to say, there is also a choice of diving centres offering trips and courses.
Things to Do
Boat trips from Sliema are readily available; you can take a simple ferry crossing across the harbour to Valletta; go on a fascinating harbour cruise or join a boat trip to the neighbouring islands of Gozo and the picturesque Blue Lagoon at Comino.
If you walk along the waterfront to Gzira you will come to the Gzira Gardens and the Yacht Marina. There is also a footbridge to the uninhabited Manoel Island which sits in the Marsamxett Harbour and is home to the 18th century, star shaped Fort Manoel and the somewhat quirky 'Duck Village'.
On the other side of the resort, facing St Julians Bay, the Independence Gardens are a pretty place to sit and relax and there is also a play area for children.
Out and About
There are endless cafes, bars and restaurants in Sliema, mainly along the waterfront, offering a laidback atmosphere by day and a warm cosmopolitan vibe in the evenings with beautifully lit views to Valletta.
Sliema is a great place to shop too; you can find many locally produced items as well as designer boutiques and high street brands. The main shopping centres are the Plaza Shopping Centre (near the ferries) on the Strand and Tigne Point, near to the 18th century Tigne Fort, at the entrance to the harbour.
You can walk along the seafront into the neighbouring resort of St Julians and spend some time at the small and sandy Balluta Beach. Or, just a short bus or taxi ride away is the lively resort of Paceville (2.5km) where you can party well into the early hours.
Nearby Attractions
Sliema is located on the bus route and has stops all along the promenade, providing easy access to Valletta and other coastal resorts. There are endless historic and archaeological sights to see around the island as well as museums and educational visitor attractions, particularly in Valletta.
The big red hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus passes through Sliema, en-route from Bugibba to Valletta (the green line) and, from Valletta, you could jump on the blue line bus to the ancient towns of Mdina, Rabat, Mosta and Attard.
