Things to Do

Siena is a beautiful medieval town with so much to see. The main attraction has to be the Piazza del Campo which used to be the place where markets were held and when it was originally built, the entire population of Siena would come to see various events such as bull races and tournaments.

The red brick hall, Palazzo Pubblico overlooks the Campo and houses a great number of worthy treasures. Art lovers will enjoy the picture gallery, Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena and then for those who are feeling energetic, there is the Torre del Mangia that offers some fantastic views over Siena.

There are plenty of other places to visit and things to do but you may be content with just wandering around and looking at all Siena has to offer.

Out and About

There are many traditional dishes to be had in Siena, many of which include wild boar and hare which may not be everyones cup of tea but there will always be something tasty in addition, such as local sausages, grilled meats and pasta. What may be more appealing to some is the range of wine that is produced in the region eg Chianti, Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Montepulciano.

There are shops all over Siena so whether you are looking for souvenirs to take home, books, antiques, wine or a little special something to wear, you will find it here. The three main pedestrian streets are full of shops, bars and restaurants so if you need a break from the shopping you won't have far to go. As well as an abundance of shops, there is also a weekly market held on a Wednesday morning and sells everything from Italian cheese and vegetables to clothes and household items.

Nightlife in Siena is fairly low key but there is still a good variety of bars and restaurants so you will be able to enjoy a few drinks after your meal. Many people enjoy strolling through the streets at night when they are less busy and perhaps watching some of the live entertainment that can be found at the Piazza del Campo.

Nearby Attractions

The historic city of Florence is just over an hour away and full of beautiful buildings and fantastic pieces of art. You can choose to visit the many historical buildings or just admire them from afar.

Wine lovers may enjoy a trip to Chianti to participate in one of the many wine tasting tours in the area. Chianti is very scenic with many vineyards, forests, medieval castles and hilltop villages, well worth the trip.
