Santorini Hotels

Santorini or Thira, is one of the most unique islands in Greece. Located in the South Aegean sea and part of the Cyclades Islands. Santorini is an extinct volcanic island with some very dramatic scenery.

The capital, Fira is well known for it's designer outlets and the cable car that goes between the town and the old port, offering some fantastic views of the solidified lava flows and rock formations.

How Hot?

The tourist season on Santorini runs from May to October, with up to 13 hours of sunshine in the peak months of July and August.

Average temperatures from May to June are 71-78ºF (22-26ºC), July to August up to 82-86ºF (28-30ºC), while September and October has highs of 73-77ºF (23-25ºC).

Out and About

Santorini is well known for it's blue-domed churches and tumbling whitewashed houses and offers some delightful scenery and breathtaking sunsets, making it one of the most picturesque islands in Greece.

Santorini is known for it's sparkling clear waters and steep dramatic backdrops and most of the beaches are black sand with pebbles but still great for a day by the sea. The beaches are popular so if it's an action packed day at the beach then Kamari beach is the best. Kamari beach offers windsurfing, water skiing, snorkelling and scuba diving and has some great tourist facilities. If it's a quiet day at the beach you are looking for then Kolumbo, set on rugged coastline is probably your best bet for some peace and tranquility.

Santorini is rich in culture and history and a trip to Santorini museum is well worth it to see the important treasures and exhibitions relating to its prehistoric past, archaeological finds, local works of art and maritime history. There are also many monuments and museums to be found in Fira, the capital.

Another interesting day out is the ancient site of Akrotiki, a large settlement from the Minoan period which is more than 3000 years old. It was destroyed by volcanic eruption and contains some amazing buildings and a well preserved central town square. Akrotiki offers an insight to a lost civilisation and is one of Greece's most important archaeological sites.

Santorini is a haven for shoppers and offers a wide range of shops, such as quaint art shops, trendy boutiques and markets. The narrow streets are full of shops selling a wide range of handmade jewellery, leather goods, local produce and authentic Greek artwork so whether you are looking for something special or a little souvenir to take home, you will be sure to find it in Santorini.

As well as having lots of archaeological sites, authentic Greek villages and varied nightlife, Santorini is well placed for island-hopping and offers regular ferries for trips to Naxos, Paros, Ios, Mykonos, Syros and Thessaloniki during the summer months.

Out for Lunch!

Santorini's cuisine is based on the islands agricultural products which all have a unique homegrown taste to them. Santorini is famous for its cherry tomatoes with an amazing flavour to it thanks to the soil its grown in. There are shrubs of wild capers scattered around the island, these are used to give flavour and spices to food.

Santorini offers tourists a fantastic choice of restaurants serving Mexican, Chinese, Italian and Greek cuisine as well as International and Mediterranean menus. Fast food outlets are on most street corners as are souvlaki shops, pizzerias and steak houses.

Dine in some of the best upmarket restaurants around the island, these are among the most expensive restaurants in Greece. There are some more affordable eateries serving excellent quality food in the resort.
