What Are Your Top Holiday Fantasies?

Posted by Sue Anderson, 23rd Jul 2015

We all dream of our perfect holiday scenarios and, quite often, that might involve a fantasy or three. Now, slow down cheeky - we don't necessarily mean of the rude sort.

Holiday fantasies mean different things to different people, so we wanted to be a little bit nosy and discover more about them. We polled 2,347 Britons aged 18 and over, all of whom stated that they had been on holiday abroad in the last 12 months.

Britons Get Most Excited About 'Relaxing' On Holiday

Initially, we asked all respondents 'What do you get most excited about when you think about going on a holiday abroad?' to which the most common responses were 'relaxing' (31%), 'meeting new people' (27%) and 'exploring a new destination' (25%). Now, we have to be honest; relaxing isn't the most exciting things in the world to do - some people might even call it boring - but we can definitely see why people look forward to it so much.

We then asked all respondents to state how often they fantasised about their holiday between booking it and leaving for their destination. The most popular responses were 'once or twice a week' (53%) and 'daily' (24%). We're with those who said daily! It's hard not to daydream about the beach 24/7 when you know you have a holiday coming up very soon.

Skinny Dipping With Partner The #1 Holiday Fantasy

Now to get to the nitty gritty...the holiday fantasies! When provided with a list of possible holiday fantasies and told to select all that applied, the top 10 answers given to us were as follows:

1. Go skinny dipping with partner / lover - 32%

2. To be in a resort full of celebrities - 30%

3. Go horseback riding on the beach at sunset - 26%

4. Join the mile high club - 20%

5. No arguments with family members for the whole holiday - 19%

6. Holiday romance with a handsome/beautiful stranger - 17%

7. Romantic candlelit dinner on secluded beach - 15%

8. Make love on a beach - 14%

9. Being rescued by a handsome/beautiful lifeguard - 11%

10. Being automatically upgraded at airport/hotel - 8%

1 in 4 Has Had a Holiday Fantasy Come True

Almost a quarter of respondents, 23%, told us that they'd had a holiday fantasy be realised on a previous trip abroad. Lucky them! Of these, more than half (57%) were female respondents. Furthermore, 39% of respondents admitted that they got their holiday fantasy inspiration from movies/films, with a further 20% admitting that they got their inspiration from books that they read.

It's interesting to hear some of the top holiday fantasies that Britons have, and to see some less risque answers in the list like getting through a holiday without family arguments. It's sad that this is something that is on Britons' minds when they go away on holiday with loved ones, as it's a time when everyone should get on.

I suppose skinny dipping is one of those situations, similar to joining the mile high club, that is rather taboo. A lot of people have no doubt thought about doing it, but if it came to the crunch, would they actually do it, or would the fear of being caught, having your clothes stolen, or finding yourself sharing the water with sea creatures put them off?
