The Facebook Faux Pas That Leads To 'Unfriending' or Being Hidden From Newsfeeds

Posted by Sue Anderson, 23rd May 2017

If you have and use Facebook, you may well have hidden someone from your newsfeed or unfriended them in the past for certain behaviour that, for whatever reason, got right on your nerves! In our latest poll, we questioned 2,178 people aged 18 and over from around the UK (all of whom were active Facebook users) and asked them about their use of the social network. As it turns out, bragging about your holidays on your Facebook page may not be the best idea...

Holiday Bragging and 'Cryptic Needy Posts' Most Likely To Get You 'Hidden'

When we asked respondents if they had 'hidden' anyone from their Facebook newsfeed in 2017 so far (so that they would no longer see their posts), 46% of the people taking part in our survey said 'yes'. These people were then asked to share their reasons for hiding the person (or people) in question and they were able to select from a list of possible answers or state their own. According to the study, the top reasons users have been 'hidden' from Facebook newsfeeds in 2017 so far are:

1. 'Holiday bragging' posts - 21%

2. Cryptic needy posts - 19%

3. Sharing too many selfies - 15%

4. Posting too frequently - 11%

5. Oversharing personal information - 10%

Those respondents who had hidden someone from their Facebook newsfeed because they were posting or bragging about holidays were asked why they had done this, to which 88% said it was 'jealousy' that had caused them to do so.

Differing Political Views Most Likely To Lead to Unfriending

Next, we asked respondents if they had 'unfriended' anyone on Facebook in 2017 so far, to which 28% said 'yes'. These people were asked what had prompted them to unfriend the person (or people) in question, which revealed the top five answers:

1. Differing political views - 28%

2. We fell out/had an argument - 24%

3. We'd drifted apart/didn't really speak any more - 16%

4. I didn't know them in real life - 10%

5. They were an ex-partner - 5%

It's unfair of people to hide people from their Facebook feeds for posting about their holidays, but it does seem to happen. Whatever happened to being excited for people? Jealousy quite clearly plays a part in this anti-social Facebook behaviour, which is a real shame. We'd encourage people to try and feel happy for their friends and relatives who are enjoying a holiday and maybe start saving some money to be able to book a holiday themselves!
