Quarter of Passengers Calm Flight Nerves with Alcohol

Our latest survey here at sunshine.co.uk has provided a bit of an insight into the lengths British airline passengers go to in order to get through their flights calmly, en route to their holiday destinations. We found that a quarter of airline passengers from the UK admit to calming their flight nerves with a small tipple.

We carried out the survey as part of research into the travel preferences and holiday habits of British holidaymakers; aiming to discover more about how people tend to behave before and during flights to their holiday destinations.

We polled 1,092 Britons in the study, each of whom had been abroad on holiday, via a flight, in the past year.

57% of those polled claimed to find flying 'nerve-wracking'

When we asked how respondents viewed flying as an experience, the majority, 57% claimed to find it 'nerve-wracking'. More than a quarter, 26% found flying 'enjoyable', whilst 15% said that they were 'indifferent' when it came to flying.

When asked to rate their nerves on a scale of 1 to 10, the average was 8

Of those that found flying 'nerve-wracking', respondents were asked to rate their nerves on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being fairly nervous, 10 being 'extremely nervous'). The average number stated by respondents was '8'.

24% of respondents admitted to taking sleeping pills to calm their nerves

All respondents that were nervous about flying were asked if they ever did anything to ease their anxiety. According to the poll, the top ways in which British passengers of airlines ease their pre- and in-flight nerves are as follows;

Pre- or in-flight alcoholic drink - 26%

Sleeping pills - 24%

Avoidance where possible - 22%

Herbal relaxation remedies - 14%

Hypnotherapy - 2%

Other - 12%

Suffering from nerves when flying is actually quite common, however, it was quite surprising to find out how many people used alcohol as a means of dealing with their nerves! A lot of airlines have very strict rules about letting 'intoxicated' passengers on board, so if you are flying, you need to be careful about how many pre-flight tipples you do enjoy.

For those who avoid flying all together, we'd recommend seeking help for your fears, through methods such as hypnotherapy or relaxation remedies, as you don't want to miss out on all the travel opportunities that are available to you.
