Men vs. Women in the Battle of the Hotel Room Requirements

Posted by Sue Anderson, 21st Apr 2015

Selecting a hotel to stay in on holiday isn't always easy, especially if it seems like there is far too much choice. Holidaymakers will often have a set idea of what they want from a hotel room and will have a list of requirements that they want from their accommodation. We started wondering if there was a difference between what men wanted to see in their hotel rooms and what women's preferences were.

We polled 1,782 adults from around the UK and asked them all about what features and qualities they looked for in a hotel room. Everyone we spoke to had been on holiday abroad in the last 12 months and had stayed in a hotel.

Air-con is top hotel room requirement for men

When we asked, 'What do you prioritise when booking a hotel room for a holiday abroad?' and provided the people taking part with a list of possible answers, respondents could select as many choices as they felt applied to them. Then, we got to work analysing the responses to find what the most common answers were for men and women.

According to our poll, men have the following top five priorities when it comes to booking a hotel room for a holiday abroad:

1. Air-con - 76%

2. Complimentary minibar - 61%

3. Big screen TV - 52%

4. Presence of balcony/terrace - 34%

5. Daily housekeeping service - 27%

Women prioritise sea-views when picking hotel rooms

According to our poll, women have the following top five priorities when it comes to booking a hotel room for a holiday abroad:

1. Sea view - 85%

2. Roll top/freestanding bath - 59%

3. Comfortable/feature bed - 56%

4. Cleanliness - 51%

5. Complimentary toiletries - 38%

Women willing to pay £110 more for a hotel room per night than men

When we asked the male respondents taking part to specify how much they were usually willing to pay for a hotel room on holiday (per room, per night in GBP), the average response was revealed to be '£55.00'. However, when women were asked the same question, the average answer given to us was '£165.00'; which was £110.00 more than their male counterparts were willing to hand over!

Men and women clearly have different ideas of what makes a hotel room meet their standards. It was interesting for us to see what those differences were exactly, and we were quite surprised by the results. The fact that, for men, having a big screen TV on their hotel room wish-list seems to suggest that they plan to spend more time in the hotel room than women perhaps do. On the other hand, the freestanding bath selection by women suggests that they perhaps look for a touch of luxury.

Whatever you look for in a hotel room, do remember that this is only a small part of your holiday. Don't break the bank by splashing out on 5* luxury if you'll hardly spend any time there. Often, 3* and 4* hotels provide the touches that you'd normally expect to find in accommodation with a higher star rating. You can always find out what features rooms have in hotels before you book, so just do your research to check you'll be happy with where you end up staying.
