Eiffel Tower 'Most Recognised' Landmark

Posted by Sue Anderson, 18th Oct 2012

Our latest survey has revealed that the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France is the most recognised landmark amongst UK holidaymakers; beating UK-based landmarks such as Big Ben, Land's End and Stonehenge to the top spot.

Despite the UK being home to a number of world-famous landmarks and recognisable buildings, it would appear that many Britons are more knowledgeable when it comes to landmarks overseas; as our latest research has revealed that the Eiffel Tower in Paris is more recognised by UK holidaymakers than any other landmark, including those in the United Kingdom.

We carried out the research as part of an ongoing study into the geographical knowledge of people living in the UK. 1,714 UK holidaymakers took part in the study, each aged 18 or over, and all respondents were shown a list and images of some of the most famous landmarks worldwide.

Only Big Ben and Stonehenge featured in the top 10

Respondents were asked to write the name of the portrayed landmark next to every image they recognised and, according to the poll, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France was the one the most respondents could correctly name; above even UK-based landmarks.

According to you guys, the most recognised landmarks worldwide by UK holidaymakers were as follows:

1. Eiffel Tower 100%*

2. Pyramids 98%

3. Statue of Liberty 96%

4. Great Wall of China 95%

5. Big Ben 93%

6. Taj Mahal 84%

7. Stonehenge 77%

8. Sydney Opera House 71%

9. Colosseum 69%

10. Golden Gate Bridge 65%

UK-based landmarks that didn't feature in the top ten were Giant's Causeway, Trafalgar Square and the London Eye.

We were quite surprised that more UK landmarks didn't feature on the list! However, there are many iconic landmarks around the world, such as the Statue of Liberty and indeed the Eiffel Tower, so it wasn't such a shock to see them at the top of the list.

Seeing the most iconic landmarks is very much a 'once in a lifetime' experience, so we suggest that you get out there and see as many as possible while you can!
