Does Jealousy Get The Better of You When Your Loved Ones Go on Holiday?

Posted by Sue Anderson, 5th May 2015

It's all well and good when you're the one about to hop on a plane and fly to some exotic destination, but when you're the one left behind when friends or family go away on holiday it's definitely not as good. Do you turn into a green eyed monster when your relatives or mates go away on holiday without you?

We polled 2,652 aged 18 and over from around the UK to find out more about the concept of holiday envy.

Holiday Envy Prevents 1 in 4 People from Asking Loved Ones About Their Holidays

When we asked 'Have you ever avoided asking a friend or relative about their holiday once they'd returned home because you were envious of their trip?' a quarter of the respondents, 24%, admitted to us that this was the case. We also asked everyone if they'd ever avoided asking friends or family members about a holiday they'd just been on to deter them from bragging about the trip, to which 36% said 'yes'.

When we asked what kind of 'holiday bragging' annoyed them when they witnessed people doing it, the top five most common answers were as follows:

1. Talking about the good weather - 77%

2. Showing off their tan - 58%

3. Having holiday photos forced upon me - 45%

4. Talking up their holiday experiences - 39%

5. Bragging about how relaxed they are - 26%

14% Have Hidden Someone from Their Facebook Newsfeed to Avoid Holiday Pictures

Our research also revealed that 1 in 7 of the respondents, 14%, admitted that they had previously 'hidden' someone from their Facebook newsfeed to avoid seeing holiday pictures that were uploaded. Harsh! So, think twice before uploaded that photo of you in the pool, cocktail in hand. Furthermore, 65% of the people taking part in our poll said that they had previously experienced 'tan envy' when someone they knew had returned from a holiday.

However, when we asked if they bragged to people about their last holiday once they'd returned home, 87% of the people taking part admitted that they had done so. In fact, 58% of the people taking part admitted to over-exaggerating how good their last holiday was once they'd returned home, when they were telling friends and family members about it.

Those who have been fortunate enough to experience a great holiday should remember how brilliant it feels and how much you want to relive the trip once you return home by talking to every man, woman and dog about it. Just sit and listen to how fantastic their holiday was, because soon it might be you wanting to brag in the same way.
