Vieux Fort

Vieux Fort, St Lucia

If you're looking for a resort that is more about nature and local culture than a well developed tourist hotspot, Vieux Fort could be the spot. Close to the airport, accommodation tends to be small guesthouses in town or you could try the all-inclusive Coconut Bay resort hotel.

Vieux Fort

Vieux Fort is a large working town on the southern most tip of St Lucia, surrounded by beaches and coral reefs. A great place to experience daily local life amongst friendly islanders and very close for the airport too.

Beaches

Vieux Fort sits on a peninsular flanked by 2 sweeping bays; on the west Vieux Fort Bay has clear waters and a harbour for boat trips and on the east, the beautiful tropical beach of Anse des Sables has views over the Maria Islands. Just outside of the town lie the sweeping sands of Coconut Bay where you will also find a wide variety of watersports.

Things to Do

Go snorkelling and scuba diving around the coral reefs of the south point. In Coconut Bay, go horse-riding along the beach or go kayaking, paddleboarding or kitesurfing from the water-sports centre.

Take a hiking tour through the plantations and rainforests, spying tropical birds, waterfalls and stunning views along the way. Or, if you forgot your walking boots, take a jeep safari instead.

On water, there are plenty of opportunities for sailing, dolphin and whale watching, deep sea fishing and romantic sunset cruises.

Out and About

The old part of the town, around Clark Street, still has some historic buildings dating back to English and French colonial times. The vibrant local market is held on Fridays and Saturdays. You can also take a heritage walk through the nearby village of Laborie (7km).

Just off-shore, the Maria Islands Nature Reserve will particularly appeal to nature lovers and has an informative visitor centre. Whether you laze on the deserted white sand beach, snorkel the clear waters or stroll through the countryside hoping to spot the resident rare lizards and grass snakes, you can be assured of a peaceful day.

The well maintained Mamiku Gardens (23km) are located just off the main road and make for a peaceful stroll through gardens of colourful and fragrant tropical flowers and woodland trails with views over the rugged east coast.

Nearby Attractions

In and around Soufriere (27km) there are excellent snorkelling and scuba diving waters off of the Anse Chastanet beach; a beautiful waterfall and botanic gardens at Diamond Falls; the geothermal fields and therapeutic baths at Sulphur Springs Park and, of course, the much photographed Piton peaks.

Just outside of Dennery (34km) you can enjoy birdseye views ziplining through the rainforests. For duty free shopping and the Craft Market head for Castries (56km).
