Map of Santa Cruz de La Palma
The man-made beach at Santa Cruz de la Palma is located next to the Marina. The beach has black sands which run for approx 700 metres and is backed by cliffs. You can go fishing, sailing and diving from the Marina, which also has a small selection of cafes, restaurants and boutiques.
Things to Do
Take a stroll alongside the Marina and the promenade and pop into the Maritime Museum which is housed in a replica of Christopher Columbus' caravel, the Santa Maria. You can also visit the Island Museum which is located in the former San Francisco Convent, which dates back to the 1500s and is set around a courtyard of orange trees. If you wander up to the castle and stand by the canons on the battlement, you will be rewarded with panoramic views over the town.
Walk, or take the bus, to the hillside hamlet of Las Nieves (2km) and see the beautiful little Chapel which dates back to the 1400s.
You don't need to be a hiker to appreciate the beauty of La Palma. There are coach tours which take in many sights around the island including the San Antonio Volcano, Los Tilos forest, Puerto Naos, Garafia and the Roque de los Muchachos.
Out and About
Santa Cruz de la Palma is the capital of the island and has a beautiful historic quarter replete with colonial style buildings, mansions, traditional Canarian-style balconied dwellings and steep cobbled streets. The main shopping street runs parallel to the waterfront promenade and offers everything from banking to quaint antique and craft shops. The main square, Plaza de Espana, is home to a pretty 16th century church and there are many pavement cafes to sit in and watch the world go by.
Santa Cruz de la Palma is located on the centre of the east coast and has easy access to most parts of the island. To the south there is the San Antonio volcano and to the west there is the marina at Tazacorte and the beaches of Puerto Naos.
To the north you have the beautiful laurel forests of Bosque de Tilos, the Las Nieves nature reserve, the remote beach of Playa Nogales at Puntellana and the natural seawater swimming pools at Charco Azul and La Fajana, near Barlovento.
The centre of the island is dominated by the Caldera de Taburiente National Park where you can enjoy spectacular views from the top of the caldera. There are many hiking trails through the park as well as information centres and camping grounds.
