Mahon has been the capital of Menorca, since the British moved it from Ciutadella in 1721. Mahon is one of the prettiest cities in the mediterranean area and is well suited to couples and families as there is so much on offer.

The port itself is relaxing by day and buzzing by night. The bars and restaurants along the port side come alive at night it is easy to spend many hours down in the port, watching the ships, admiring the view, enjoying the hospitality of the restaurants, or just sat taking in the atmosphere.

Mahon is less than 10 minutes transfer time from Menorca Airport.

Beaches

There is no beach in Mahon but there are plenty nearby. The beach at Punta Prima offers beautiful fine white sand and a couple of bars/restaurants. The beach at Es Grau is also nice and sandy but is sheltered by pine trees and has its own fresh water lake.

Things to Do

There are plenty of sightseeing opportunities here, including La Mola, a large imposing historic fort which is located at the entrance to the harbour, the large Baroque church of Santa Maria and also the beautiful opera house that was opened in 1892 and now used to show films and hold music concerts. There really is loads for those who like a little culture.

There is also a gin factory here where you will get to see how the gin is made and even get to sample a little of the finished product.

If you are fortunate enough to be here around the second week of September, you will be able to see the many events that take place during the Fiesta de la Mare de Deu de Gracia. There are food stalls, street parties, dancing, live music and a great big party with parading horses. There is a fantastic fireworks display over the harbour on the last night.

Out and About

With the amount of restaurants in Mahon, you really will be spoilt for choice and will be sure to find something to your liking, no matter what your budget is. Seafood is very popular here but there are plenty of other options too.

There are also plenty of bars and nightclubs available so if you fancy a drink or two after dinner or you want to party into the early hours then there are plenty of options available.

There are plenty of shops to be found along the pedestrian streets of Mahon, here you will find a range of cake shops and fancy boutiques but you will also find a great range of products at the markets that are held twice weekly.

Nearby Attractions

If you fancy getting out of Mahon for the day then why not take a trip to the championship golf course at Golf Son Parc. It's a beautiful course and is ideal for beginners and the more experienced golfer. The course is just minutes from Son Parc beach so you could perhaps combine the two on your day out.

There is a horse riding centre nearby and they provide classes and pony rides for all levels. The scenic countryside is just waiting to be explored and can be done on foot or perhaps by mountain bike or scooter. No matter how you choose to explore the area, you will come across loads of interesting and beautiful places.

The fantastic Fort Marlborough is close to Es Castell was originally built by the British and has been restored and preserved to show exactly what it would have been like for the soldiers. I'm sure the kids will find it just as interesting as the adults will.

Not only does Ciudadella have a great selection of shops and restaurants, there are also many historic things to see such as the 14th century gothic cathedral, a couple of museums and the remains of the fortified walls. For the perfect end to your day, venture down to the harbour for a drink and enjoy the atmosphere.
