Costa de la Luz

Costa de la Luz Hotels

The Costa de la Luz (Coast of light) is on the western area of the Andalucia coastline that faces out to the Atlantic.

Costa de la Luz has a rich and lively culture and offers fine golden sands, impressive cliffs and hills and many great leisure activities. This part of the coast has not seen the same high rise development as other areas but there is still plenty on offer to ensure a great holiday.

How Hot?

Costa de la Luz enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with short mild winters and long hot summers, boasting an average of 300 days of sunshine a year.

The average high temperatures in Costa de la Luz for the winter months of December to February are 60-62ºF, peak summer months are July and August with 86-87ºF, while spring and autumn see averages of 75ºF.

Out and About

The Costa de la Luz stretches from the most southern point of Spain and along its west coast to the border of Portugal. Separated by the beautiful natural scenery of the Donana Natural Park, this region of Andalucia comprises the Huelva province in the north and the Cadiz province in south. The Costa de la Luz offers a considerably more Spanish atmosphere than the tourist resorts along the east coast and includes the well preserved and historic cities of Cadiz, Seville and Jerez, the superb surfing beaches of the south and the unspoiled beach resorts of Isla Canella and Islantilla.

A visit to Seville is a must and it is centrally located for resorts and cities in both the Cadiz province and the Huelva province. This encaptivating and historic city epitomises Andalucian life from the tapas bars and flamenco to the beautiful architecture and plazas. Whilst in the city you can visit the magnificent Cathedral of Seville and see the Giralda Tower, stroll around the maze of streets in the old quarter of Santa Cruz, shop in the elegant El Centro district, relax in the parks and stay until late to experience the vibrant nightlife.

The Donana Natural Park comprises pine forests, salt marshes and beaches and is widely recognised as a bird-watchers paradise. There are visitor centres located throughout the park and regular activities include hiking and horse riding, mountain biking, quad biking and boat trips.

Day trips to Gibraltar or Morocco are easily accessible from the Cadiz province. The high-speed catamaran from Tarifa (which is approx 1 hour drive from Cadiz) will have you in Tangiers in around 30 minutes. The rock of Gibraltar (80-90 minutes drive) offers duty free shopping and a number of tourist attractions including the St Michaels Cave, the Great Siege Tunnels and of course the famous Barbary Apes.

The Cadiz province:
Cadiz is a beautiful city, surrounded by the golden beaches of La Caleta and La Victoria. Visit the Cathedral Nueva, with its notable gold tiled dome, browse the Plaza de las Flores flower market and see the Santa Catalina Castle. Capture the essence and traditions of Spain from the picturesque city of Jerez with guided tours of the sherry houses, socialising in the tapas bars and an authentic flamenco night. Rota and Novo Sancti Petri sit either side of Cadiz and are surrounded by beaches and natural parks, ideal for windsurfing, sailing and outdoor activities.

The Huelva Province:
Isla Canella is connected to the mainland by a bridge. It is an island of beaches and a nature reserve rich in birdlife, combined with a chic marina, a golf course, modern shops and restaurants. The fishing village of El Rompido offers waterfront seafood restaurants for relaxing days and nights and, similar to the modern resort of Islantilla, beautiful golden beaches, golf and watersports including windsurfing and sailing.

Out for Lunch!

Costa de la Luz is the ideal place to try shellfish, seafood and fresh fish. Olive oil is used a lot in the cooking of food. Cured meats are also very popular in the resort. Tapas bars are a must try whilst holidaying here. You can try a large variety of local produce by dining in a tapas bar including squid.

The cuisine is very Mediterranean based with lots of olive oil, seafood, fresh fruit and vegetables but has a good choice of menus in the restaurants. There are plenty of luxury restaurants as well as snack bars scattered around the resort. Travelling further inland will take you to a more residential area with you can try local dishes at a cheaper price
