La Laguna
Steeped in history and offering an authentic experience of real Tenerife, La Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is also perfectly located for exploring the north east coast and the capital. Tenerife North airport is located on the outskirts of the city, keeping transfers to a minimum. September is a great time to visit when the festival period begins with markets, live music and lots for the children and all the family goings on in the square.

The city lies 600 metres above sea level in the heart of the island but has easy access to the coast. The golden Saharan sands of La Teresitas beach at the fishing village of San Andres is approx 25 minutes drive away (18km). The beach is set in a mile wide shallow bay, with clear warm waters and a scenic back drop of the Anaga Mountains. For lunch you have a choice of bars and restaurants along the promenade or in the village centre where you can also find a little shade in the church square.
Things to Do
Explore the Anaga Mountains. You don't need to be a hiker to enjoy the scenery, although there are some great forest walks. But, if you prefer to drive then, starting at San Andres you can follow the main road as it winds its way through the mountains and takes you on a circular route back to La Laguna. Or you can veer off towards the town of Taganana, passing hamlets clinging to the hillsides as you make your way down to waterfront on the north coast.
Out and About
Stroll around the city and you will find cobbled streets and plazas, traditional Canarian architecture with wooden balconies, museums and historic buildings at every turn. Visit the History Museum and the interactive Museum of Science and the Cosmos. Sit in the Plaza del Adelantado in the old quarter and admire the colonial architecture. Go to the Plaza del Cristo for the food market.
On the outskirts of the city you can relax in the gardens at the Parque La Vega and watch the fish in the lake; there is also a cafe, a skate park, BMX circuit and a playground for children.
Visit the La Laguna Cathedral on the Plaza de los Remedios and see it's fine domed ceiling. The Cathedral maybe relatively new but the site, originally a church, and many of the statues and artworks inside date back to the 1500's.
Nearby Attractions
The seaside resort of Bajamar (15km) is just 20 minutes drive away and here you can stroll along the promenade, take a dip in the the large seawater swimming pool which is next to the small sand beach or enjoy a fresh fish supper by the harbour.
The island's capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is approx 10 minutes drive (11km) and offers a blend of the old and new with historic buildings and modern shopping, the cruise port and tree-lined promenade. Relax in the beautiful park gardens of Parque Garcia Sanabria or by the pools at the Parque Maritimo Cesar Manrique.
