How Hot?
Cuba has an average annual temperature of 80ºF making it a great holiday destination all year round. The best time to visit is during the winter months when it's dry and sunny most days. Tropical rain showers can be expected during the spring and summer months, mostly lasting just an hour or two in the afternoon.
Hurricane season runs from July to mid-November with September and October generally the most active months for hurricanes or tropical storms. While the likelihood of a direct hit is small, if travelling during hurricane season, we recommend you check out your travel insurance cover before you leave, and shop around if necessary to make sure you have the necessary cover.
Out and About
Cuba is a large Caribbean Island lying to south of Miami and the Bahamas with a diverse landscape of tropical rainforests, beautiful beaches, mountain ranges, semi-arid desert and acres of sugar, fruit, coffee, cocoa and tobacco plantations.
Cuba is surrounded by over 500 miles of coral reefs and the clear, warm waters are rich with a vast variety of fish, corals and sponges. Scuba divers will be in their element with literally hundreds of dive sites and shipwrecks to explore. Diving schools are of course in place for tours, introductory lessons and progressive courses.
The island has several marinas with coastal cruises and sport fishing trips readily available. In addition to scuba diving, other water sports and activities include water skiing, catamaran sailing, windsurfing, pedalos, speed boats and banana boat rides.
For a fascinating blend of historic and colonial buildings, cultural attractions and lively nightlife choose a boutique hotel in the atmospheric city of Havana or Santiago de Cuba, both of which are just minutes from beautiful beaches.
For water-sports and the best in scuba diving try Cayo Coco and for an all-inclusive beach retreat where you can swim with the dolphins, try Guardalavaca or nearby Playa Pesquero. The most developed beach resort is Varadero which, not only lies alongside 13 miles of white sands but also, has a shopping centre, indoor and outdoor shows and entertainment, a golf club, an underwater park, gardens and lagoons.
Out for Lunch!
Cuban cuisine is full of African, Caribbean and Spanish influences with a fusion of spices and flavours. It has very strong similarities to Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico cuisine. Rice and beans, otherwise known as Arroz Congri Oriental, are a main staple of the Cuban diet and are accompanied by most meals. The standard of the food you will find in restaurants in the resort centres are generally not very good and the service is very slow. For a better quality meal and service you are better off going to an All Inclusive hotel.
You will find a variety of restaurants around the island as well as All Inclusive restaurants. these are the better places to eat, purely down to the quality of the food on offer. Snack bars can be found but serve mainly pizzas and sandwiches. Some Cubans sell snacks from their own homes, spotted by the food in the windows.
