How Hot?

The Cape Verde Islands have 350 days a year of sunshine where temperatures range between 69.8°F (21°C) and 84.2°F (29°C). There is a constant ocean breeze blowing keeping the average humidity between 40% and 60%. The islands have just two seasons; the Tempo das Brias (time of the winds) which runs from October to mid-July, and the ideal time to visit for watersports; and the Temp das chuvas (rainy season) from August to September, when there can be brief but heavy rainfall.

The coolest months to visit are January and February with temperatures between 60.8°F (16°C) and 69.8°F (21°C). The warmest month is September where temperatures average at 80.6°F (27°C) but can reach up to 96.8°F (36°C).

Out and About

Many many attractions are available across the islands and here's a snapshot of what's available:

Boa Vista - The clear, turquoise waters are ideal for diving and snorkelling during the summer and enjoy an abundance of colourful marine life.

Sal - Quad bike and jeep tours are readily available and ideal for exploring the natural landscapes of the island as well as the towns and villages.

Santiago - Popular activities here include hiking, bird-watching. Stop for lunch, admire the mountain views, watch the fishermen trade their daily catch and see the deserted Tarrafal Concentration Camp.

Sao Vicente - Offers a blend of flat plains and volcanic peaks, fishing villages and hiking trails, surfing, beaches and secluded coves.

Cape Verde is a must for any fish lover. You can enjoy a variety of freshly caught fish including octopus, lobster, garopa and tuna fish. Some of the specialities to try out include Cachupa Rica-a stew with corn, pumpkin and vegetables, Canjo-a soup with rice, chicken and carrots and Queijo de Cabra com Doce de Popoia-a dessert of cabra slices served with popoia jam, these are all a must to try. A standard side dish served in Cape Verde is fried potatoes and rice.

Many of the restaurants on the island have live music at least one evening a week. Depending on where you are depends on what is served in the restaurants. The smaller islands have little choice on the menus but the menus in Santa Maria have a much wider choice. There are plenty of restaurants as well as snack bars dotted around the island. If you are self catering there is one supermarket to fill up your freezers with a variety of different foods. In the larger resorts there are numerous self service superettes, whereas the smaller resorts have limited supply of foods due to the deliveries.
