Beaches

The Golden Mile refers to the string of beaches near downtown, and is well known for its excellent surfing. The beaches are patrolled throughout the year by lifeguards and protected from sharks by nets. Along the waterfront are a number of play pools and playgrounds for children, and there is a long promenade lined with numerous shops, bars and restaurants, as well as the uShaka Marine World Aquarium.

Things to do

The Ushaka Marine World is found on Durban's Golden Mile, and combines Wet 'n Wild, Seaworld, the uShaka Beach and a Village Walk offering a unique world of fun and entertainment.

There are a number of buildings worth a peek and places to visit whilst staying in Durban and just some of these include the Old Fort, Botanical Gardens, De Gama Clock and City Hall.

Some of the popular activities to enjoy whilst visiting Durban include surfing, windsurfing, diving with sharks, scuba diving, bungee jumping, safari adventures and boat cruises.

Out and about

Durban has many different shopping options available throughout the city, with street markets offering a selection of crafts and beadwork, the Indian district features a variety of goods from the East along with curry powders and spices, one off boutique shops and large malls.

The city offers a good mix of nightlife, with countless clubs, bars and restaurants available particularly along the waterfront and on Florida Road.

Like many large cities Durban has good and bad areas, be aware of pickpockets in the market areas and along the promenade, and if walking at night stick to the busier tourist areas.
