How Hot?

Everyone likes to know how hot it is likely to be on holiday, so we've rustled up some info to let you know a little more about the Climate. The Canary Islands are known as 'The Islands of Eternal Spring' for their famously pleasant weather all year round. The Canaries have warm and sunny weather, with temperatures rarely under 61°F (16°C) in winter and 77°F (25°C) in summer.

The islands southerly location around 100km from the north-west coast of mainland Africa, means that during winter they are much hotter than mainland Spain, however they are generally cooler than might be expected due to the surrounding Atlantic, cold Canary current and north-east trade winds.

Sometimes the islands endure the hot sirocco wind (also known as 'calima'), this can make conditions very hot, dry and dusty; reducing visibility and causing disruption at airports, though this usually only lasts for a few days.

Out and About

There are so many things to do across the Canary Islands, here's a snippet of what's on offer.

Fuerteventura, an island with over 150 beaches ranging from white sands to black sands and surrounded by waters which are perfect for all popular activities. The most famous of Fuerteventura's natural attractions are the vast sand dunes of the Corralejo National Park.

Gran Canaria, of the beach resorts, Maspalomas, Playa del Ingles and Puerto Rico are the biggest and liveliest. Street markets take place throughout the week all around the island and some of the most popular with tourists include Arguineguin on Tuesdays and Puerto Mogan on Fridays.

Lanzarote, The Timanfaya National Park is one the islands most popular natural attractions and comprises miles of lava fields which you can travel through by coach or by camel. Rancho Texas Park, just outside of Playa de los Pocillos, offers family fun during the day amid the landscaped gardens with tropical wildlife.

Tenerife, Dominating the centre, the magnificent heights of Mount Teide can be seen from almost anywhere on the island. The clear warm waters and trade winds mean water sports enthusiasts can enjoy surfing, diving and sailing.

The Canary Islands are made up of 7 different islands. The cuisine in the Canaries is typically Spanish with a mixture of African and Latin American. Tapas is very popular as is Mojo sauce and Canarian potatoes. Some of the dishes to try include Almogrote - a hard cheese and garlic eaten with bread, Puchero Canario - chickpea vegetable stew and Bienmesabe - an almond cream used in cooking. Some of the main staples in a Canarian diet include fish, corn and bananas.

The Canaries have a great choice of dining options ranging from luxury restaurants right through to side street snack bars and fast food outlets, something to suit all budgets.
