How Hot?
Aruba is a year round destination, with temperatures averaging around 82°F, where the consistent trade-winds provide a refreshing breeze. From January to March are the most popular months to visit and is also the islands high season. Aruba's rainy season is from November to December with warm and light rainfalls that vanish as quickly as they arrived. Unlike most Caribbean islands Aruba lies outside of the hurricane belt.
Out and About
At just 20 miles long and approx 5 miles wide, Aruba is relatively easy to explore and island tours by jeep, bus (not least the popular Banana Bus) or horseback are readily available.
Naturally scenic sightseeing on Aruba has to include the landscapes of the Arikok National Park, a wide expanse of rugged coves, hiking trails, Indian caves and geological sites. For historic and cultural interest visit the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins and the Aruba Aloe Museum and Factory. For wildlife and nature, you can enjoy the colourful tropical gardens of the Butterfly Farm and the somewhat unique Ostrich Farm. For shoppers, the colourful Dutch architecture of downtown Oranjestad provides a charming setting for a myriad of local handicrafts as well as designer boutiques.
For swimming and sunbathing, try the white sand beaches of Arashi Beach, Eagle Beach and Palm Beach, Druif Beach or Surfside Beach. For snorkelling try De Palm Island or Baby Beach and for windsurfing and kitesurfing go to Hadicurari Beach, Andicuri Beach and Boca Grandi.
The Aruba Carnival comprises numerous festivities during the weeks before Ash Wednesday, culminating in the final weekend seeing flamboyant parades of marchers, calypso bands and an extravaganza of colourful floats and costumes taking over the cities of San Nicolas and Oranjestad. If you miss the Carnival, you can enjoy a taster experience at the Carubbian Festival or the Bonbini Festival, hosted by the same towns each week. International annual events hosted by Aruba include the Aruba Reef Care Project (July) and Aruba in Style Fashion Week (November).
Out for Lunch!
Traditional food served in Aruba consists of goats meat, fish, maize and stoba which is stew pots filled with vegetables. Common snacks include one known as Pastechi, a pie filled with beef or cheese. There are many delights to be consumed on the island of Aruba from soups and starters right through to delicious sweets and desserts. A few of the popular dishes from around the island are Sopa di Pompuna-made from pumpkin, Balchi di Pisca-balls of fish, Cala-traditional Aruban dish made of bean fritters and Ayacas-rolls of meat wrapped in leaves.
Try out many of the culinary delights in a variety of restaurants scattered around the island. You will also find a selection of International dishes, Italian food and Chinese restaurants. There are numerous All Inclusive hotels around to enjoy dining in or try one of the little stalls dotted around for a more traditional snack.
