Situated on the popular island of Fuertaventura in the Canary Islands, Caleta De Fuste is a thriving beach resort catering to families, couples and young people looking for fun in the sun. The island enjoys good weather throughout the year, although the busiest time is during the summer months from June to August when temperatures are at their hottest. Caleta De Fuste was purpose built as a resort town so it has all the amenities you will need for relaxing and cheap holidays by the beach. The resort was built about fifteen years ago around the original cove area, which offered the perfect sheltered waters for swimming and beach activities. Caleta De Fuste is only around six miles south of the island's airport. The resort is sometimes called 'El Castillo', because of the castle in the main harbour, a focal point of the town.
Caleta De Fuste is a great spot for young families looking for cheap holidays with plenty to keep the children amused as the beach is safe and the central location of the resort makes it ideal for exploring the many attractions of the island. Without a doubt one of the main attractions of the resort is the beach itself, which was also man made using imported golden sands. The result is a delightful, gently shelving, horseshoe shaped beach which is a lovely place to spend a day sunbathing and watching the world go by. For the more adventurous, there are plenty of well priced activities on offer, including diving, sailing and boat trips. It is also a great spot for windsurfing and complete beginners are catered for, with a number of windsurfing schools operating in the bay.
The port area is the place to go for boat trips, with an incredible range of different excursions to choose from. Children will love the Oceanarium Explorer with its glass bottom to allow excellent views of the colourful marine life below the waves. You can also organise dolphin and whale watching trips from the port in season. These trips have high success rates in spotting these majestic creatures in the wild and are likely to be one of the high points of your visit.
A little farther afield, there are a number of excellent day trips from Caleta De Fuste and if you wish to take advantage of these, it may be worthwhile renting a car for a day or two. One excursion that will delight all members of the family is the 'Oasis de Los Camellos' zoo at La Lajita. On the east coast of the island, the zoo has a range of animals to get to know, but the main attractions are the parrot shows and horse rides. Particularly enjoyable are the camel safaris; a memorable experience for all the family. The zoo has a delightful palm tree lined bar area where you can relax between activities and the children will love exploring by themselves.
For those interested in history and culture, an excellent day trip is the ancient capital of the island at Betancuria, around 15 miles west of Caleta De Fuste. Founded at the turn of the 15th century by Norman conqueror, Jean de Bethencourt, the city was repeatedly raided by pirates who eventually destroyed it completely, causing its citizens to move away. What remains today is no larger than a small village. There are many houses and buildings dating back over 300 years and the Casa Santa Maria in the centre of the village is a stunning colonial building, housing displays of the island's traditional crafts, culture and historical information. There is small outdoor cafe in a beautiful courtyard and a more formal restaurant, offering some of the best food on the island.
Caleta De Fuste has plenty to offer after dark as well, with a number of excellent restaurants, bars and clubs. The cuisine available is quite diverse, with a number of traditional Spanish eateries as well as a range of fast food outlets for those on cheap holidays or looking for a quick bite. With the proximity to the sea, it is not surprising to find some excellent seafood restaurants in Caleta De Fuste, with 'Frasquita' being an ever popular choice for its excellent fish dishes and beach front location.
Night time entertainment can be as quiet or as lively as you like and generally the resort is fairly peaceful so those taking children on cheap holidays to Caleta De Fuste need not worry about getting them to sleep. Many hotels and complexes provide their own entertainment, such as discos and quiz nights and there is also a nightclub in the Castillo Centre for those that want to dance the night away. Piero's Music Café, also in the Castillo Centre is open late and offers live music, shows and karaoke. There are often drinks promotions on so visitors on cheap holidays will not be disappointed. So whether you are travelling with small children, teenagers or as a couple, there is plenty to keep you busy in Caleta De Fuste from sunrise to sunset and beyond.
