How Hot?

Cyprus enjoys 11 out of 12 months a year of brilliant sunshine, making it a popular year round destination; the best time to go depends on what activities, if any, you have planned for your trip. Cyprus enjoys an intense Mediterranean climate of hot dry summers starting in mid-May and lasting until mid-October. Winters are mild and quieter running from December to February, separated by short autumn and spring seasons.

For those preferring to avoid the intense summer heat, the spring and autumn seasons still offer sunny days with temperatures of 70F-80F, coupled with a cooling breeze. Alternatively the Troodos Mountains can be refreshingly cooler during the summer months, ideal for hiking, sightseeing or simply relaxing and, during winter snow becomes frequent on the summit lasting for several months.

Out and About

From the party capital of Ayia Napa to the lively cities of Larnaca and Paphos and the more family friendly resorts of Protaras, Coral Bay and Pissouri; Cyprus has plenty of beaches, bars, restaurants and entertainment in well established resorts promising fun holidays in the sun.

But, there is far more to Cyprus and its not hard to discover its beautiful countryside filled with vineyards, pine forests and wild flowers; archaeological sites, quaint villages and cities with old quarters oozing Turkish charm.

Main Beach and Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa are long, sandy and very crowded but, as with the main beaches around Paphos, they generally have good swimming waters. On the south coast, you have the beautiful and famous Aphrodites Beach or, for surfing, try Kourion Beach and Melanda Beach.

Larnaca and Limassol are good spots for diving and there are a number of caves and shipwrecks to explore for experienced divers. Diving centres do of course cater for all abilities from snorkelling and try dives to open water courses. If you just want to have wet 'n' wild style fun, there are 3 aqua parks in Limassol.

Historic attractions include several archaeological sites in the Paphos and Limassol regions. Visit the Tombs of the Kings, see the beautiful mosaics in the House of Dionysos, the Medieval Castle of Limassol and, Kolossi Castle, a fortress close to ancient Kourion.

Dominating the centre of Cyprus, the Troodos Mountain range provides scenic territory for walking and hiking through the forests and along the mountain trails. The highest peak, Mount Olympus, enjoys a short season of snow from January to March and has 4 ski slopes which are ideal for beginners and intermediate skiers.

On the west coast, the Akamas National Park blends scenic nature trails through lush countryside with sandy beaches and is home to the famous Baths of Aphrodite. It is also close to the fishing villages of Polis and Latchi which blends a traditional atmosphere with modern resort facilities.

Out for Lunch!

Cypriots love a feast! They use fresh ingredients with all their food. Souvlakia is the most commonly used product on pork or lamb. Grilled halloumi cheese is very popular in Cyprus as is calamari, octopus and sea bass. Traditional sweets are a big hit here usually made with figs, small aubergines, walnuts and watermelons.

You can find a wide choice of traditional tavernas, restaurants, hotels and snack bars. There are 24 hour bakeries serving great treats. There are traditional souvlaki shops on every corner in every town, sometimes competing with each other.
