Mellieha

The town of Mellieha sits on top of a hill, overlooking the 'tail end' of Malta. An attractive hilltop village with a central street winding downhill. It is also surrounded by great views of the countryside and the bays.

Beaches

Set in the shelter of Mellieha Bay, Mellieha boasts the longest sandy beach in Malta. The pale sands shelve gently into clear waters, suitable for swimming and families with children. There are a number of diving centres in the resort, catering to all abilities and other popular water-sports include snorkelling, sailing, speed boats, water skiing and windsurfing.

Things to Do

Popeye Village is a year round tourist attraction where you can have fun at the film set from the Popeye musical production; browse the Popeye Museum, play minigolf or watch a show. There are rides for small children and during the summer there is a beach lido and water trampolines. During December the attraction is themed for Christmas.

The Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal is just 3km north of Mellieha Bay and ferries run to and from the neighbouring island of Gozo all day long. The ferry takes car and foot passengers and the journey time is approx 20 minutes.

If you enjoy a walk (or a short drive) and a secluded beach, head up to the north peninsular, passing the Red Tower and relax at Paradise Bay (2km) or, head in the opposite direction towards the White Tower, to Arnier Bay (3.5km).

Out and About

Sitting high above the Mellieha Bay and surrounded by terraced farmland, the town of Mellieha is a quaint maze of narrow streets and authentic Maltese atmosphere. Here you can see the large, ornate Parish Church and admire stunning views over the Bay. Close to the Church, you can walk through the WW2 Tunnels and Air Raid shelters which tell a fascinating story.

You will find plenty of bars and restaurants in Mellieha as well as some livelier nightclubs during the summer season. In addition, the town is on the local bus route to Valletta and many of the coastal resorts and medieval inland towns, should you wish to explore.

Nearby Attractions

On the opposite side of the island, (5.5km from Mellieha Bay) you will find the golden beaches at Golden Bay and the quieter Riviera Bay. Both are perfect for sunbathing and swimming but Golden Bay is better serviced if you are looking for water-sports and refreshments.

There are many museums, ancient towns and archaeological sites to explore across the island, as well as a wide variety of tourist attractions; such as the Palazzo Parisio & Gardens at Naxxar; the Water Park on the road to St Julians; St John's Cathedral, the Inquisitors Palace and the Malta Experience in Valletta and; the Aviation Museum and Craft Village at Ta' Qali. Visit the picturesque fishing village of Marsaxlokk on the south coast and the ancient towns of Rabat, Mdina and Mosta in the heart of the island.
