How Hot?
Italy is a popular destination, with many of its cities and resorts packed with visitors during the summer months.
The spring and autumn months are a great time for a city break; without the soaring heat of summer and fewer tourists can make this the ideal time to visit.
While in the summer, warm temperatures and bright sunshine make Italy's islands and coastal resorts the perfect choice for a beach holiday.
Out and About
Italy is full of tradition, culture and a fascinating history, offering a great variety of activities and attractions. So whether it's shopping in the beautiful Milan or a day sightseeing in the amazing Rome, you will find something to your liking.
Although there are so many things to see and do in Italy, it does offer some great destinations for beach holidays too. There are some popular spots around the Italian Riviera, the Adriatic and Amalfi coast but if you are looking for some secluded beaches, why not try the southern coast of Sicily. Tuscany also offers some cosmopolitan seaside resorts such as Marina di Peitrasanta and Viareggio.
There is lots going on in the Venetian Riviera, with the popular resort of Lido di Jesolo and the stunning city of Venice. Pisa, which is home to the famous Leaning Tower is also growing as a holiday destination.
Many of the great excursions include a visit to Rome, the Capital and as well as being known for it's fantastic food there is a great many things to see and do here. There are many galleries here with some of the greatest paintings. The Vatican which is the smallest independent state in the world is based in Rome's Vatican district and well worth a visit to see the guards which have been guarding the city since the year 1500. You must also visit the Vatican Palace, the museum and it's beautiful gardens or take a trip to the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's stunning ceiling frescoes.
Another popular trip is the rediscovered city of Pompeii which is one of the biggest excavation sites in the world, buried for hundreds of years after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Tuscany brings you Florence and Siena which are both world-famous centres of art and culture. In Florence, you will see Italy's best-loved masterpieces such as Michelangelo's David, the city's Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio.
If you want to get away from the busy cities and top attractions, why not do some hill walking or climbing in the Gran Paradiso National Park or Mont Avic Regional Park. The inhabitants of the National Park of Abruzzo include Marsican brown bears, wolves, chamois and eagles.
Out for Lunch!
Italian food is simple with most dishes having between 4 and 8 ingredients. Cheese and wine are a major part of the cuisine as well as espresso coffee. Italians are known for their love of pasta. This is categorized in 2 styles, fresh and dried. The difference being fresh pasta is stored in the fridge for a couple of days whilst dried pasta is made without egg and can be stored for up to 2 years. There is an Italian law stating that dried pasta can only be made with durum wheat flour or durum wheat semolina.
Italian cuisine is savoured all over the world, Tuscany use white beans and bread without salt and in Rome they use pecorino (sheep's cheese). A must try whilst on holiday is the spinach ravioli served with lasagne, cheese or pizza! You can dine in a variety of establishments in Italy. In a bar you can enjoy a sandwich, morning coffee or a pastry. A tavolo caldo serves mainly fast food and are found in every resort. For a more formal dining experience try an Osteria or a Trattoria for a more casual meal.
