How Hot?
Croatia's coastline has a pleasant Mediterranean climate, where summers are hot and sunny, and winters are cold and wet. Inland is a more continental climate with cold and snowy winters, and warm summers. A popular time to visit is between April and September, though the coast will be too cool for swimming in April.
Out and About
Croatia boasts mile upon mile of beautiful coastline bordering the clear blue waters of the Adriatic Sea and the Mediterranean. Perfect for outdoor adventure, city sightseeing or simply relaxing; Croatia has a scenic landscape of mountains and gorges, lakes and waterfalls, uninhabited islets and beautiful beaches, historic cities and UNESCO heritage sites.
Outdoor activities take full advantage of the scenic landscapes and, with 8 national parks and over 400 mountain trails, mountain climbers, cyclists, walkers and cyclists of all abilities are presented with plenty of options. Canoeing, rafting and kayaking the lakes and rivers can range from leisurely drifting past historic castles to fast flowing rapids and thundering waterfalls.
There is plenty to see along the coast too, as Croatia has over 700 islands and islets, dozens of reefs and over 1000 bays. Needless to say, there is a choice of sailing and diving schools and over 50 marinas to cater to your needs.
On the Dalmatian Coast, the beautiful walled medieval cities of Dubrovnik and Spit are UNESCO world heritage sites and offer a rich cultural experience. Cavtat is a heritage town with a charming waterfront, secluded bays, Roman monuments and palaces. Mlini is a peaceful village on the Dubrovnik Riviera. Orebic enjoys sheltered beaches, surrounded by natural wine country and views to Korcula Island. The ancient city of Zadar offers something for all tourists from the historic quarter to contemporary bars and modern shopping; beaches, trekking, diving and rafting.
On the Istrian Coast, the relaxing tourist resort of Rabac has a string of beaches with transparent waters. Porec is an established tourist resort and combines well preserved historic attractions with a diverse range of land and water-sports. The medieval fishing village of Primosten is home to sheltered, pretty coves, the Kremik Marina, pine forests and century old vineyards. Pula is an ancient and well preserved city with a stunning amphitheatre used to host events, miles of gorgeous coast line and in easy reach of the Brijuni National Park. The romantic town or Ravinj is rich with Venetian architecture and surrounded by natural greenery.
On the Kvarna Riviera, Opatija is an elegant resort with attractive parks and luxury hotels. Inland, at the foot of the Medvednica Mountain, the capital of Zagreb offers a treasure trove of sights, beautiful parks, museums and galleries surrounded by countryside and castles.
Lying just off shore the picturesque Hvar Island combines medieval cities with vineyards, olive groves and the relaxing scent of the lavender fields. Korcula Island is famous for it's old town located on the fish-shaped peninsula and as the birthplace of Marco Polo. The scenic Rab Island is located in Kvarner Bay, and offers a traditional atmosphere, scenic walks and coastal villages.
Out for Lunch!
Croatia's cuisine has its own culinary traditions within each region in the country. The mainland cuisine uses lots of spices, lard and garlic for cooking and has a Turkish and Austrian theme to it. The coastal regions have influences from Greece as well as Mediterranean cuisine using olive oil, herbs and spices. The food in Croatia was simple peasant food, until a recent revamp of the menus and now you will find a great choice of menus including Chinese, Thai and American cuisine.
The resorts are full of cafes and restaurants. In the cafes you can order snacks and drinks to a fish speciality. The restaurants offer a good choice of menus with local produce to choose from. Its not expensive to eat in Croatia therefore the best option is to go self catering to make the most of trying the local cuisine.
