Things to do

One of the most popular attractions in Johannesburg is a visit to Soweto on a township tour. These tours provide a great insight into daily life in the segregated black neighbourhoods constructed during the apartheid years.

A visit to the Apartheid Museum will take you on an emotional journey enlightening the journey from racial segregation to social equality.

Visit the World Heritage Site 50 km from Johannesburg, known as the Cradle of Humankind inside some 300 caves palaeoanthropologist have discovered thousands of fossils of hominids and other animals, dating back about 4 million years.

Out and about

The prosperous northern suburbs are safe areas filled with shops and restaurants, markedly Sandton which has several shopping malls, and Rosebank with unique shops and a daily African Craft Market.

Infamous for being a dangerous city, it is safe for visitors sticking to the tourist spots and avoiding dangerous areas. Do not leave bags or valuables visible in a car, and keep the doors locked, even while driving.

Other things of interest

The city of Pretoria is just 50 km north of Johannesburg, a pleasant city with historic buildings and a centre that is easily explored on foot.

Sun City is around 180 km away, about two and a half hours drive time, it's a large entertainment resort, popular with golfers and families.
